 Hello to all. I have had my baby for about five years. Red Ryder is an '83 xlt full size. When I bought the rig it had a new 302 put in it. I don't think the mechanic was to good because I have had some issues. I have always wanted more power but have only been able to get a 500cfm 2bbl holley for it. Now to the interesting thing. My friend has to get rid of his '73 Maverick that happens to have a high compresion bad ass 68 mustang 289 in it. Its mine. I am pretty sure that the blocks are the same so that will not be a problem. I am not sure if his motor has a c6 like mine. And if it does will it fit up to my transfer case NP stock 208 I think. If it is a different tranny is it possible to make it fit to my transfer case. I was almost giving up on my baby but now I have a motor that ran mid thirteens in Mav, so I will have the power for fun I have always wanted. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. [-o<

 Um, my stock tranny has about 150,000 miles on it and feels weak. His is strong and has a shift kit. My problem is I don't have the money for a tranny rebuild. Well maybe, how much to rebuild a c-6?

thanks for the advice $-)

C6 rebuild would cost you only about 5-600 dollars for a good rebuild. be glad its not an E4OD, thats 1500 to rebuild. his car probably has a C4 tranny, so i dont know if the bolt pattern of your C6 would match the 289. also, his is a 2wd tranny, so the tailhousing is much longer than your 4wd C6. so in stock form, it will not bolt to your 205 unless you divorce the tcase and run a short shaft from the trans to it, but that will result in very steep driveline angles to the rear dif. rebuild the C6, easier than swapping in car stuff. and concerning the motor, you can get 4bbl intake manifolds used pretty cheap, along with larger 600+CFM 4bbl carbs

Very true about the new speed once it is in the Bronco, but I do think it will be vast improvement over the stock 135hp. If the bolt pattern is different is their anyway I can get my c-6 to bolt to the 289? [-o<

Thanks a lot for the info guys I appreciate it.

oh, yeah it does have a c-4 attached to it.

happy wheelin' :)>-

small blk. ford is smallblk. ford, the trans off a 302 or351w will fit onto a 289, so if your's is weak try getting one out of a wreckers, there are many yr's of bronco's and trucks that used small blk. c6's, just get one that had the same model of t/case

Why not? My stock Bronco has 135hp & 220ftlbs. This motor has over 300hp, that is more then double the power. I will be able to go through more wheeling places then befrore. If you have a reason why please tell me because I don't want to make a bad swap.

Thank you for the info

We put a 351w in cowboydans truck when we built it last spring, just a smogger, and it works awsome, I've even said the next truck I build will be a smallblk. truck. My bb is so heavy and torquey that I am tearing up my driveline. Go for it , I don't think you are making a wrong move, if it dosen't seem to have enough bottom end, you can always change your gear ratio to get some. I don't need more gear , but with the 429 being able to rev higher i'm going to 488's next season.

Oh and just a point of caution, you will have to change the flexplate, you will need one for a 289 to c6, the c4 one will sit at a different hight and will take out the frt. pump on the trans.

That motor making 300 HP is fine but at what RPM the 289 has a shorter stroke than a 302 makes it wind up faster but way less torque . In a car its a great motor but not for a truck with double the weight . The 351W would be your best and easiest swap it has a 4 inch bore and 3.5 inch stroke and with the right heads and cam will give you the performance your after and its pretty much the same physical size as a 302 . Thats why I wouldnt do that swap the vehicle is just too heavy and Im sure that 300 HP is not off idle horsepower . :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

No the horsepower is peak, but a 289 dosen't run that much higher rpm then a 302. This motor dosent' rev to twelve thousand rpms. And the dude who said waste of money. The motor is free and while cost hardly anything to put in. And for the dude who said do my homework and I will have less power? 300hp, close to equal torque, so dude how am I going to have less power? Plus if the low end is lagging new gears will do. Funny how you run a small engine as well but don't think this will work.

Man you can do what you want to do its your truck and your motor but you are the one that asked for everyones opinions so no whining or complaining when they give them to you. Fact is the 289 is not an ideal engine for a 6000 lb truck I personally dont think a 302 is any better for that application either . I have had 302,s in alot of my trucks and I always changed them out for 351W,s The longer the stroke the more torque the motor will produce why do you think everyone is stroking small blocks into 427,s ? They wouldnt be doing it if the motor had enough nuts in stock form . The 289 has a stroke of 2.87 inches , the 351w has a 4 inch stroke and some of the stroker motors are up to 6 inches . Its kinda the big block theory of theres no replacement for displacement but in this cae you have the displacement without the weight of a big block . But Like I said its your truck your motor your money do what you want , everyone is just offering there opinions just as you asked . :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

True and I do appreciate the advice. I am only doing it because it is free. If I had the money stroked would be my choice. And I got good info on the parts and specs

thanks guys

Christopher,

What are the torque and HP specs for the 289?

What RPM are they peaking at?

300 hp at the flywheel is going to become 125 to 150 at your rear wheels....

If the peak torque of the 289 is coming in over 2500 rpm, you will have a dog for a truck, not fun always having to run the trails in low range first gear all day.

My friend ran it on a dyno so it is power ratings from the rear wheels. I know that peak hp is 305 at 3300 rpm. I can't remember where the torque peak is, but I think it is a little bit higher. The torque is at or about 325. Yeah I am worried about the power only being availble at higher rpm's. Anything else you have for info is appreciated.
