i think the 289 swap is alright. if you find that you lack low end tq then you might swap a different cam. nothing wrong with a small engine. a 300hp 289 is still better off than a 351w making 200hp. my truck weighs in at 6500lbs, i run an 85' 351 and have little issue with it... on propane no less. i say put the freebe in and go buy some gears, as long as you have made the right gear selection the output of your engine means little

And the dude who said waste of money. The motor is free and while cost hardly anything to put in. And for the dude who said do my homework and I will have less power? 300hp, close to equal torque, so dude how am I going to have less power? Plus if the low end is lagging new gears will do. Funny how you run a small engine as well but don't think this will work.

If/When you do the swap, be sure to make a thread about it and take pics. it should be interesting. The only thing that would concern me about running the smaller motor is the fact that it was built as a high-rev motor. In my line of work, running smaller but more powerful motors in medium to larger boats will always reduce their life span. It makes sense, if you think about it. If that motor is constantly turning over 2500+ RPMs simply to get into the power band, your not going to have it for more than a couple of years before it needs a rebuild. One marine motor that comes to mind is a certain Yanmar diesel. SMALL I-6 (for a boat) around 350 c.i. Yanmar built it to push upwards of 500 horses, and 1500 torque. those things blew heads, rings, and pistons left and right. why? too much power out of too small of a motor for the load it was pushing, and it was a very hi-rev diesel ( redline at ~4500). You probably think, well the CTD is only 350 c.i. well, its also only pushing 8,000 pounds as opposed to 25,000 pounds. Do you see where I'm going? you will probably enjoy slightly better than average power for cruising on the highway, and it will be fun for a while. But then the motor is going to start to hurt, and its going to break. And you'll wonder why you didnt just go for the larger motor that was BUILT FOR BIG TRUCKS in the first place

Very true, I graduate from school at the end of summer and start the hunt for good jobs so hopefully in a year or two I will be able to afford a bigger motor. I see what you mean by the high revs and weight so this motor will probably only last for a year or two and hopefully I can put a bigger one in. It looks like the motor will go in over thanksgiving break or christmas. We are pulling it out tomorow. I don't live near the area where the car is. I will take pics and post the motor on Sunday night or monday.

Hi,

i don't know if this helps or not,

but i had a 1972 E 300 van.

i put a 289 out of a 1966 mustang with the mustang 4 speed, ran 275 gears,

drove it for years. it was a stock motor i don't know the hp.

I'm a nostalgic guy and i miss my old van.

also i had a hot rod 289 when i was a teen ager,

going from 275 gears down to 300 gave the van a noticeable power gain, but i later went back to the 275 gears for thrift

regards

bill...
