I am buying a hood today and need to know if an '89 hood will fit my '86?

Sorry, but no, the 89 uses a different core support for the hood attachement than the 86 model. JSM84

there are front end conversions but you will need a lot more than the hood unfortunately.

here is a pic. grey truck in the front is an 89. one in the back is an 85(same as your 86).
