I have been reading on the forums and doing a lot of research, but I am just now finally getting around to introducing myself. I've been looking for a toy for the past year and a half and was dead set on getting a Cherokee  , but my good buddy who is a jeep guy and ex-mechanic suggested I look for something bigger (I am not a small person - 6' 2" and 280 lbs - and enjoy the room in my wife's Suburban). I had $1500 saved up in my car fund and happened to see an 88 Bronco for sale in the paper for $1700. I called about the truck and my buddy and I went to check it out the next day. "Frankie" was the perfect off-road vehicle > . There was no rust except for the tailgate (imagine that!), the hood was peeling and the paint faded, but she was all original! The only thing missing on her was the dome light lens. Needles to say, I was stoked at the find, cause I really appreciate older vehicles that are well taken care of. It was shortly after that that my bubble burst. We took the old girl for a test drive, and after about 10 minutes of back road cruising the tack spiked and she quit moving. The tranny was "dead". I let her sit for a while and cool down and was able to get her back into gear and back to the owners house (hoping it was just old seals) [-o< . I told him what happened and offered him $500 cause having a transmission worked on isn't cheap and my budget was tight. Needless to say he balked, and I sadly walked. The next day he called and offered to me for $1000. we eventually settled on $675, I went over, paid the man and drove her home  . I was in love. It's now a month later, and after a new radiator (the tranny cooler lines were leaking and letting coolant into the system), a new/used/remanned C6 (to the tune of $200 - the entire top of the old bell housing was cracked and broken off- ***), a new starter, flywheel, some u-joints and a tune up and she's running again
/ . I did everything myself except rebuild the tranny to stay in budget. Future plans are a 6" suspension lift, 35" A/T tires, a new dual exhaust system and an MSD ignition. I've only had her for a mont, but I'll never go back to a regular truck.
P.S. - I will post pics when I have a ncie day to take them!
