ok. installed new starter. charged battery. first time tried, the engine cranked right away. let it run for 5 minutes, then turn off. 5 minutes later i get nothing. i think i hear the starter turning, but no crank otherwise. what in tarnation is goin on. i get volatage readng from solenoid so dont think its that. any ideas?

do you hear just a clicking? I would bet that your starter solenoid went out. They are real common in doing that. Take a screwdriver and rap real lightly on that thing and then try it. Sometimes that will do it, other times it won't. But the selonoid will go out for no reason sometimes. Also check your battery cables and make sure they are in good shape because they will effect the starter selonoid too.

I agree, sometimes the neg battery just makes enough contact to run the lights and radio but not enough to juice the starter. Pull if and clean the terminal.
