I have a 1993 Bronco, for about the last 6 months while driving, I hear something that sounds like a spring tightening coming from the steering wheel. And just within the last 2 weeks I have noticed sudden slack in the steering wheel while turning, it only lasts a split second but I notice a delay in my vehicle turning when this happens. And the last 2 days my horn honks whenever I turn or hit a bump in the road. Have been told that I should just completely replace the entire steering wheel, but I am not sure that is the best solution. And do they mean the entire column also? Help please.

Something is obviously broken inside, it doesn't sound good.

Assuming that this is a tilt column, it could be the tilt mechanism is coming loose inside.  Actually, replacing the steering column is a pretty easy job if you can get one form a junk yard or you could check eBay.  There are 4 bolts that hold it to the dash and 4 bolts that attach it to the floor board plus the linkage under the hood.  The hardest thing to do is to separate/attach the shift linkage.

You could start by pulling the steering wheel and inspecting the tilt mechanism.  You will need a steering wheel puller.  Also check for slack in the steering box.

good luck,

:)>-
