As I was coming home today there was a little volkswagen that would slow down and then when I went to pass him he would speed up this went on for a short time and then I floored it and passed the volks with ease, BUT a few seconds later as I checked out what kind of damage I had done to the gas gauge I noticed that my oil pressure gauge was going nuts. It kept bouncing between zero and half. So I pulled over checked oil level and limped home. Oil level still good, all other gauges good. At a loss. Any advice is always greatly appreciated.

you most likely just need an oil pressure sending unit, they go bad sometimes, if your motor isnt nocking or chattering, odds are its that sender, its located driverside front side of the engine, its short stubby looking thing, with a 20-22mm bolt head i believe with the wire plugged into it

I'm such an idiot. I found the post about oil pressure 2 seconds after I posted. So should it be ok to drive. No knocking oil level good, just crazy gauge.

No knocking, drive it and get a new sender unit. When you put it in, don't use Teflon tape on the threads, they are designed to seal and they need to make good contact for the gauge to work properly.

Good luck,

OK to make myself look a little more stupid, here goes. One guy (local) tells me oil pressure sending unit, another tells me oil pressure switch. Which do I need. Sorry to keep asking dumb questions but as you can probably tell already I'm not the most mechanically inclined person on here.

One more dumb question on this subject and I promise I'll let it go. Here goes, it turns out it was'nt the sending unit but the gauge itself. My question is mechanical or electrical?
