I just started calling around today for prices on a bench rebuild for my AOD and I am one unhappy camper. I was pretty sure it would need help when I bought the truck & the seller was telling me I"d need to go in & change the filter (yeah, right thanks) and after driving home last night @ 12mph & 3000rpm I'm now sure of it. The tranny dipstick is covered with a pinkish charcoal slurry so I'm pretty sure this one's done.
Local boneyards want upwards of $700 for a used unit with no idea what the history or milage is, most of the shops I called WON'T do a bench rebuild and the ones that will are very wary & giving me huge price ranges like $800-$1600. Considering what the fluid looks like I figure I'm looking at a wost case scenario. The shops that *would* consider a bench rebuild are saying they won't warranty the work because there are too many variables such as my correctly setting the throttle pressure when I reinstall, whether or not I run a trans cooler, etc and unless they remove & reinstall they won't stand behind their work.
I really don't want to pay someone to do a job t hat I'm perfectly capable of doing, especially when I need to replace the flywheel while the tranny is out and I *really* don't want to pay Ford $92 for the flywheel and then pay someone else to install it. It just defeats the entire purpose of having a cheap project truck, the idea here is not to just throw money at the problem but that seems to be all anyone here wants me to do. The freaking thing is 19 yrs old and I have shop after shop telling me that I simply can't work on this thing myself. I'd consider a C6 swap but by the time I get into custom driveshafts & Xfercase adapters I've spent just as much as a shop-rebuild and I've lost my overdrive to boot.
This is just plain wrong, no matter how you look at it. A guy should be able to fix a 20yr old truck in his own driveway for goodness sake.
