Hello Everyone. My name is tim i'm a newbie to this forum. :D In the past year I traded a pair of rims&tires for this 1990 brII,

but it won't go into gear. Engine is strong. I changed tranny fluid, to no avail. <_< my 4-wheel drive ind. lights are on as well as low gear lights on dash, when i try to push the selector switch to shut them off they both come back on after a couple of seconds. also i removed the trasfer moter to see if it was in 2wd or 4wd or 4wld and it was in 2wd. when i shift to r-d it sound like the motor bogs a little, but still won't move. I sure could use some help if anybody has any other ideas :D

WELCOME!

OK, Prob an E4OD if it has the Overdrive LED - Push button switch in end of tranny shifter stalk

"but it won't go into gear."' can you move the shifter at all w/engine running?

Shift Lever Stuck in Park (pic is gone); "...These (and many other) vehicles are equipped with a Brake/Shifter interlock for safety. This system requires the driver to hold the brake depressed before the shift lever can be moved from the Park position. There is an actuator (solenoid) on the left side of the steering column under the dash that disengages the shifter lock when the brake is depressed. In the event this system malfunctions, the shift lever may be stuck in the Park position. One cause of this complaint may be due to a faulty brake switch circuit. If you experience this complaint always check for blown fuses and brake light switch operation before proceeding with other work. I can shift the lever when the engine is running, but it does not have a overdrive button. it does have an od on the display that tells you what gear you're in on the inst. panel though. what do think about the "on" lights that won't go off for the 4wd & low gear in the inst. panel?
ok Tim;

AOD - E4OD Identification; If the shifter has a P-R-N-OD-D-1 pattern, the transmission must be an AOD (applicable to 1980-1993 vehicles). If a 1989-1993 truck has an Overdrive Cancel Switch and a P-R-N-OD-2-1 shifter pattern, then it is equipped with an E4OD transmission

AOD Late, harsh, or no shift; TV pressure too high - check and adjust; Governor stuck or dragging - clean governor, Valve body problem - replace valve body

TV Brass Bushing "...are known to have problems with TV cable adjustment, and it's often due to the original rubber bushing cracking & falling out while driving, which normally destroys the transmission in a couple of miles. But it's so common that Ford makes this upgraded brass bushing (see pic for Ford part number), which is cheap (~$10) & easy to install..." Source: by Steve

For the transfer case; you'll have to look @ what Ric w/ the "travel Stop" did and do the tests by Dustin

yw Tim,

Do Self Test first.

Read Joe's info; print it out...take your time; warm engine to norm op temp first (no need to get it in gear)

do Key ON- Engine OFF (KOEO) first then key one, engine running (KOER) next for any codes.

Then confirm that you have an AOD. If so, do the bushing inspection first...and make sure TV cable and brackets are in-place then either do the TV adjusmt. w/pressure gauge or take it to a local shop w/good rep; I advise friends to use a tranny shop where Police/Fire Dept takes their vehicles.

later.....
