We've got a 94 XLT that we've had since September, although this is our 3rd bronco. We've also had a 79 and an 86. Gotta love these trucks.

We're in the process of replacing some things, one of them being the clear plastic cover on the guage cluster. There is a warning notice on it telling us to call a 900 number before removing the cluster. Of course, they want $10 to continue the call. We asked our local Ford dealership, but all they could tell us was that they had to call the number when they replaced it. They couldn't (or wouldn't) tell us what they did after they placed the call. Now $10 isn't a bunch of money but we can figure out what the big deal is. I have a feeling that it might have something to do with the odomter (its digital) and fraud, but I can't figure out what that would be. We'll probably just spend the $10 bucks but it's got us curious as heck.

Any ideas?

yo!

Don't spend the $

here is the info on da 900# (these 2 TSB's have the udated 800 #); it is ref to Pointer Waiver TSB 96-21-11 for 92-96

PSOM Pointer Waiver TSB 96-21-11 by Ford for 92-96

Programmable Speedometer/Odometer Module Pointer Waiver Article No. 96-21-11

ISSUE: The speedometer needle may waver and/or a light surge may occur on some vehicles when speed control is used

at highway speeds between 80-113 km/h (50-70 mph). This may be due to slight dents/chips in either the exciter ring

or the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) and air gaps between the VSS and the exciter ring.

ACTION: Replace the Programmable Speedometer/Odometer Module (PSOM) if required. New PSOM's come with increased immunity to system

variability. Refer to the following Diagnostic Procedure for details.

DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE

BRONCO/F-SERIES - Perform normal PSOM diagnostics per Pinpoint Tests "H" and "J" of the 1996 F-Series/Bronco

Body/Chassis Service Manual, Pages 13-01-30 through 13-01-32 and Pinpoint "B" of the 1996 Powertrain/Drivetrain Service Manual,

Page 10-03-11.

1. Any slight dents, chips, etc., in either the exciter ring or VSS will create needle waver. Measure air gap between

the VSS and exciter ring. It should be 0.38-0.51 mm (0.015-0.020").

2. Check exciter ring runout per the same ring gear backface runout procedure of the appropriate model 1996

Powertrain/Drivetrain Service Manual, Section 05-00. Make sure the exciter ring is mounted correctly to the

ring gear. If runout is more than 0.1 mm (0.004"), perform the differential runout check per the procedure in the

appropriate model 1996 Powertrain/Drivetrain Service Manual, Section 05-02A or 05-02D, to find cause and repair as needed.

3. If all items listed above check good, replace the Instrument Cluster Assembly. Obtain the correct service part number from the Parts Catalogue

and then contact the Electronic Odometer Exchange Center at (800) 259-9700 for U.S. Dealers and (800) 663-9974 for Canadian Dealers.

NOTE: DEALERSHIP MUST TELL THE ODOMETER EXCHANGE CENTER THAT YOU NEED A PSOM3 LEVEL CLUSTER FOR A SPEEDOMETER NEEDLE WAVER CONCERN.

OTHER APPLICABLE ARTICLES: NONE

WARRANTY STATUS: Eligible Under The Provisions Of Bumper To Bumper Warranty Coverage

SPEEDOMETER - ELECTRONIC INSTRUMENT CLUSTERS, PROGRAMMABLE SPEEDOMETER/ODOMETER MODULES - DIGITAL ELECTRONIC ODOMETERS - SERVICE REPLACEMENTS WITH PRE-SET VEHICLE MILEAGE

ISSUE:

Service replacement speedometer odometers, speedometer modules, electronic instrument clusters and PSOM (programmable speedometer/odometer module) clusters, with mileage preset to the mileage displayed on the removed cluster odometer, are now available. These components must be ordered through one of three Electronic Service Centers (Two (2) U.S.; One (1) Canadian). They will be provided on an exchange basis and will not be available through the parts depots.

ACTION:

If service is required, refer to the following ordering and shipping procedure.

ORDERING PROCEDURE

U.S. DEALERS

The repair Form FPS 1878 must be filled out in sections 1A and 1B indicating the required vehicle information. A toll free phone call must be placed to the respective Electronic Service Center to relay the vehicle information:

Dealers who are normally serviced by the Detroit, New York and Atlanta Parts Distribution Centers should place their orders through the Eastern Electronic Service Center Call Line, 1-800-262-9606.

All other U.S. dealers should place their orders through the Western Electronic Service Center Call Line, 1-800-321-6969.

-------

only dealers can exchange the PSOM/cluster via the Center; local dealer quoted about $400.00

but.......... they are avail at almost all yards....from $75.00 to $125.00

the clear plastic cover is generally not avail seperately from da cluster since most all yards won't part it out.. you can try anyway.

Thanks for the info. So in all of that technical jargin, it sounds like we won't have an odomter reading when we plug the guages back in.

We aren't replacing the guage cluster, just the plastic cover. We bought the new one from LMC Trucks. We found LMC when we took the 302 out of our 86 and replaced it with a 351. Those folks have received lots of my $$.

We also need to remove the guages so that we can remove the dash to repair one of the mounting brackets. Since I really don't want to pay Ford $95/ hour to do anything to my truck, I guess we'll have to find another way to accomplish everything.

It's amazing how different things are, we've owned many Fords...trucks, vans and Bronco's. This is a first for us.

Again, thanks for the info. Looks like I have found a source of info for my hubby's Bronco, hopefully it will live up the great site that I have for my Sport Trac.

You can pull the cluster out w/gauges, PSOM and replace the cover w/out losing your odometer reading.

I had my cluster out for a month..it'll hold the mileage indefinitely, make that forever.

Here is how Ken got the cover out, wihout disconnecting the gauges & PSOM

It is about white face gauges...but shows the diy job

You may be able to get da cover off w/Out removing the "remove the upper part of the column cover you will need to remove the ign. tumbler"

As usual, when I pulled my cluster out, our diggie cam took a hike south.

& thanks for the tip on LMC selling the cover!

Thanks for the link. I like those white faces.

LMC is a great place, you could practically build a whole truck with parts from them.
