Driving home from work today and the engine just sputtered and died. Coasted to a parking lot about 2 miles from home, and looked under the hood. The only clue I've got at the moment is that when I turn the key, I don't hear the fuel pump whine. The pump is only about 4 months old, but I went ahead and hoofed over to the parts store to exchange it under warranty. No whine. When I turn the key, it fires up for a few seconds, then dies, like it's starved of fuel.

I checked my fuse panel under the dash, and all the fuses are ok. No multimeter or trouble light, so I couldn't pull codes at the time.

Please help, this guy is my daily driver and I need him for work.

I'm open to suggestions.

Hows the fuel filter??? If your starving for fuel you may just need a filter, you wont hear it whine for long if the filter is completely clogged because it already has the pressure.......

You can pull the codes without a meter or light. It'll flash them out thru the ck engine light. You just need a small jumper wire for when you access the diagnostic port. I'd type the process out but I'm reasonably for sure that Joe will be along soon enuf to post it for you & he does a much better job :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

As far as possible causes I'd ck the fuel pump relay first. It's under the hood right next to the diagnostic port so you'll be in there messing with it anyways.

Dave,Bebopman is right, he needs a multimeter to pull codes. the '84-87's won't flash the CEL,
You're right Joe, my bad. It's been so long since I owned one. I didn't do anything to my 84' other than beat it into the ground & the 86' wound up at the bottom of the lake before I could do anything to it.

Updates...

Changed out the fuel pump relay, now I hear it clicking when I turn the key, I didn't before.

KOEO test comes back with 11, OK.

Double-checked the intertia switch, wasn't tripped.

Still no whine, won't start.

So next thing is to see if you have 12 volts back at the pump.

IF not, then check both sides of the inertia switch.

Remember that Seabronc did a write up on how to create an access panel to get to the fuel pump without dropping the tank.http://broncozone.com/forums/index.php?sho...amp;#entry62738
So far I'm working with the HP fuel pump, on the frame rail.

I've got a test light, and I run a wire from the battery NEG terminal back to the pump. I clip the lead of the test light to one of the pins on the fuel pump wiring plug, reach up and turn the key. I expect that for 2 seconds, I should get a light on the test lamp if i have +12 at the pump.

I've done this with both sides of the plug, and I still have no light.

Great! So at least you know that there is a chance that the pump is still good!

OK so I just realized that you have an 86... a two pump system. Is there a fuel pump relay for EACH of the two pumps?

I'll have to check a wiring diagram, but I think that there is.

Ok so I checked, and it seems that there is only one fuel pump relay. Fuse #15?

So you are sure that the relay you hear clicking is the fuel pump relay, and not the EEC relay which is probably right next to it.

You might want to back probe the connector to see if it has power, or if you have a helper, you may be able to feel it click.

Well, if there is, that second relay is somewhere else. The bracket that holds the fuel pump relay does seem to have room for two relays, but only one is mounted.

At this point, the primary symptom that I'm following for my diagnosis is the lack of a whine from the HP pump when I turn the key on. I take that to mean that the HP pump is not pumping.
