Started my truck the other night and it was running rougher than a cob. After doing a compression check I found that cylinder 2 only had between 30 and 60 pounds. No smoke, so I figured a burnt valve or something like that. I went out tonight to start tearing stuff off the engine so I could pull the head. Just before removing the carb, intake, exhaust, etc. I grabbed onto one of the rockers on cylinder 2 and to my surprise it moved all over the place with no tension. DO YOU LIKE LONG STORIES? :D Then noticed the spring was collapsed, it doesn't seem broken just collapsed. Anyone ever see that before? If so, do you think it was just a weak spring? I'm thinking about replacing the spring and seal in place without removing the head. Has anyone done that? If so, anything I should be careful of? OR, should I just go ahead and pull the head first?

Looking forward to your response,

:)>-

Just ran out to take a couple of pictures, now that I look at them, maybe the spring broke :glare: .

More likely, "broke"

It's an easy fix...there's a kit that hooks up in the spark plug hole....( $15+-) hook your compressor line to it & pull the spring...! It's that simple.

I always place the piston at TDC....just in case "murphys Law" comes into play. If the valve should drop...you could pull it back up with needle nose. That has never happened....the air really holds it in place.

I've snapped a few spgs. in my big blocks.

That method worked great. After two hours of finding the right fittings so I could mate a nail gun compressor to my compression gauge hose  it took 5 minutes to do the swap. It sure saved a lot of time compared to pulling the head.

Thanks! Bully Bob
