1986 Ford Bronco Eddie Bauer has been having problems with starting. Actually when starting the engine the starter or the ignition seems to be stuck in starting. The starter will not stop trying to start even though the engine is still running. I have changed the ignition coil on the passenger fender, changed the starter, the battery was no good to begin with and changed that, then I changed the ignition switch ( key switch ) itself. What else can I do. When I try to turn the engine off it keeps running even with the keys out so I have to disconnect the battery. It seems like the key ignition switch itself in side the steering wheel is stuck in the starting position. If so how can that be repaired. Need help does anyone know what is going on??? My Haynes manual shows nothing on this subject!!!

You said ignition coil on the passenger fender, I assume you meant top say "starter relay". What you haven't looked at is the ignition switch. The key on the column is not a switch, but operates the ignition switch that is mounted on the top of the column under the dash. That is done via a push rod that the key operates. That switch could be out of adjustment or the link to it may be broken.

See this for the adjustment procedure http://broncozone.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=7243

Good luck,

wouldnt that be the selonoid on the passenger fender? and he says that it keeps cranking even with the key out, that means he hooked up the cables wrong on the selonoid, the cable that comes from the battery to the selonoid goes on the post closest to the firewall, and the cable that goes down to the starter goes on the post closest to the battery, and all of the smaller acc. wires also go on the post closest to the firewall, just swap them wires around and it will take care of that

It depends, some years it is a starter solenoid and other years is is only a relay to operate the solenoid that is mounted on the starter motor, looks the same. If the ignition switch is out of adjustment or has a bad return spring, it can cause the same problem. He had the problem before he started changing things.

I have had this exact problem and mine stuck on till it melted the battery post. It was the starter realy on the wall, fixed in 2 minutes after an hour walk to the store.

I tried checking the starter relay wiring first since it seemed to be the quickest fix and checked the wiring diagram and I have the same result. The truck is still trying to start with no keys or in the off position. I am going to try sea bronc's diagram and see if the ignition switch itself is stuck in the start position under the dash on the steering column. One more thing when I reconnect the battery the engine keeps on tryin gto start with out keys and in the off position (supposedly). I also replaced the battery cables because when I bought the truck they were burned and the starter relay was looked fried. When I changed everything the truck worked fine but a week later I started having this problem. Could be that the wiring harness to the relay itself is damaged? I don't know just trying everything to back in the dirt.

yeah a good thing to do is become as simple and primative as possible with this type of problem, eliminate everything you can so the system is as simple as possible

I will try pulling off the small connector first and I also purchased a new ignition switch just in case(the actual one that goes on the steering column under the dash). I really appreciate all the help . :-B I only understand simple so I have to keep it simple.

When I was changing my alternator out a few weeks ago, I had put the hot wire to the wrong post on the starter solenoid/relay. When I went to hook the battery cables back up, it tried to start, and almost ran over me (I always park in 2nd gear, standard tranny). Make sure you've got the alternator wire to the correct post. Let us know how it works out for you.

I would like to thank all you guys for your input and help. My 86 Bronco is back in the dirt and running. I followed you guys instructions and it was the starter relay. I first bought a starter relay from autozone and wired it back the way it was originally wired which was wrong because that relay did not come with a diagram. Needless to say that relay was later also fried(after trying to start the Bronco). After buying a new starter, key switch, ignition switch. and battery I finally listened to you guys and bought a quality starter relay from Oreillys which came with two sets of diagrams. Wired the starter relay correctly and the Bronco fired up without any problems and shut off with any problems. Can' t thank you guys enough !! :D/
