The engine I currently have in my 88 Bronco II (a 2.9 L V6) doesn't make a ton of power (it only will get up to 55 mph on a level surface). What would be some recommended engine swaps that would give me 150+ hp and wouldn't cost a lot? I'm open to pretty much anything.

austin tx,
im in the same boat on my 89 mine will do 80+ though but no balls what so ever lol. I'm gonna look for a wrecked 91-94 explorer and do a 4.0 swap.

The 4.0L V6 was offered in the Ranger pick-ups, or you could squeeze a 302 V8 in there. JSM84

my suggestion would to do a 302 swap. there are detailed instruction and parts list on jamesduff.com that is what im doing on my 89b2. it doesnt have any lag probles when i had stock tires on it but a little bit with bigger tires.

you dont need an engine swap to get more power......i have an 88 bronco II 2.9 efi and I can burn both rear truck tires a half a block with just a bigger cam!!!! well... before my fuel system problem///////with a bigger cam $80, some 19 psi injectors "junkyard" $10 each, and a cold air intake $60,,, you shouldnt have a power problem ... unless you engine is junk.. i would check on craigslist for injectors and cold air intake.... you might be able to find a deal

I have been told that 195 is just the car companies stickin to the safe zone, that some more power can be squeezed out of an engine at a little higher but provisions have to be made with Higher PSI caps etc.
