Hello, this is my first time having to do anything to an axle so forgive me...Anyways, I broke a u-joint which ruined my axle(driver side). When I replaced the axel I just replaced what came out. Well the axle leeks out both ends and talked to few people that said that there are needle bearings on ends of axel housing. HELP!!!! Thanks. Oh, if anyone has a schematic that would be awesome. I only have one of a dana 60

First of all there are no needle bearing's in the axle houseing.Once the axle shaft's are out you can pull the carrier out(this would be the part with the ring gear attached to it).Once you have that out, you'll be able to see the seal's.They will be right under the bearing cap's but a little furthur in.If all your going to do is change the seal's you don't have to worry about reshiming anything since the shim's are pressed under the bearing's on the carrier, and the pinion shim's are under the inner bearing race.A Dana 60 axle is just like the Dana 44 only smaller.

Sorry. It's front axle. The U- joints broke first. then streched out the yoke. I think thats the right terminology.

It's a solid front dana 44. Thanks for the diagrams SB. Is the 44 one relateable to the solid front. I have the chilton book but all it has is a diagram of dana 60 front solid.

When you pull the carrier out to replace the seals make sure you mark the bearing caps (2 bolts on each side) left/right, top/bottom. A good pry bar will pull the carrier out just be ready to catch it. Axle seals will fail when an axle or u-joint breaks due to all the movement. Its all standard maintenance...

There are needle bearings in the spindle assembly that support the outer 1/2 shafts and a seal as well. This area should be filled with grease, not oil. The oil is in the pumkin and those seals are located in the shafts. Like Broncoholics said, you'll have to pull the carrier out to replace the seals. If you have a Haynes manual for the '73-'79 Ford Pick-up and Bronco, look on page 174 for the Dana 44 exploded view.

The spindle is where ther wheel bearings are and I understand that they get packed with grease. My question reflects the pumpkin and inner axle shaft housing area. Just want to make sure that everything that seals and supports the INNER axle is maintenanced from the inside of the pumpkin. I am leaking gear oil out the ends of the housing shafts. (pours out at a camber)

OOOPS! sorry didn't realize you were looking for a solid 44. Probably most parts, but I definately wouldn't trust it from the knuckle back. Certainly the axles would be different. Unfortunately I don't have a solid 44 diagram.

Hey thanks SB. You are always a great help. Didn't the 79 bronco come standard with a solid 44 front?

Yes it did. The only thing holing the axle in place is carrier. Once the axle shaft and carrier is out you will see how it works with the splines. No needle bearings. ONly place with needle bearings is the u-joints and spindle bearing. The seal just keeps the gear oil from exiting. The spindle bearing should be replaces, this keeps the shaft from loabing around.

They might have a kit, but that sounds expensive and you would get more stuff than you need. You can probably get away with just replacing the axle seals. If the wheel bearings feel good just repack them. If they need replacement get a complete set with races. Hammer than out and back in. Check the spindle bearings also. With the hub off you can replace the rear seal that keeps water out of the hub. Other than that if the ball joints are good thats all you need. Keep it cheap. The axle seals are only a few bucks each. You will need a diff cover seal too.
