I ran cb radios for years and the best thing I found was to have 3/4 of the length above the top of the vehicle. Fiberglass or metal doesn't really matter if the antena is not laying on it. Bolt it on and just get one long enough to clear the cab with 3/4 of the length in the air above the cap.

Firesticks are good, Wilson's I like a little better and midland makes a really good full wave fiberglass antena that I used for many years.

No matter what you settle on make sure to get a SW Meter (Standing Wave) and check the level, when they are tuned right you will get much better broadcast and ears from them and there is little chance of burning up a good raido or amp.

I had trouble getting a good ground on the rack. For Trail running I am not real worried about to much above the cab as range is not as much of an issue.
