okay heres the problem I'll be driving like 30mph so its just like cruzing, I'll stop at a red light for no more than a minute or 2 when i got to take off i'll gett about half way through the intersection and then the engine will sputter make a clank noise and almost stall, until today when it did stall in the middle of a busy road.

is it the carb or what?

i have a brand new holley carb 600cfm, and a rebuilt 302 everything is new, what could cause this?

holleys are known to be problematic carbs. for some reason the race guys love em. Did you change the fuel filter and pump when you did the carb? could be a little rust or dirt in the system.

also, how big is the carb? 650 is a little overkill for a 302, you may have to rejet it down a little.

check the float as well for adjustment and leaks.

sorry to put so many things, but it could be one of many things, im just trying to point ya in a little direction.

Good Luck.

If you cant get it, sell it to a hot rodder and try an Edelbrock there pretty good out of the box, with only minor tweaking here and there. seems more user friendly then the Holleys.

Personal experience from about 10 years ago, I had a Holley on mine and as long as I stayed on the road, it was a great carb. The minute I left pavement and started up a hill climb or over rocks, that son-of-a-gun would load up and die on me. I got in two spots that it caused my engine to die in the exact moment that I needed gas and because of the failure, I almost rolled. I spent more hours tuning and tinkering with that Holley than any other carb I have ever owned. That particular carb now sits on a 66 Mustang Fastback and is absolutely amazing. Now I have heard that the new Holley Truck Avengers are pretty good carbs for 4x4s and off road use, but in my opinion, on a 4 wheel drive vehicle, you have better luck going with the original carb or either a Carter or Edlebrock. Some guys know how to tune those Holleys and have great luck with them, so if you just bought it, go to the library and get a Holley book or call their customer service and ask for a technician and have them help you dial it in. If you go through the steps to get it dialed in and it still takes a crap on you, put the old Motorcraft carb back on and get a different brand carb.

That clank noise could be the valves clattering. Have you checked the timing? As far as the carb, I would replace the power valve. The older holley carbs don't have protection against a backfire and almost every time will blow the power valve out. Hope this helps.

Hey,

I have a Holley 650 4bl on my 351W and have similar probs.

the one thing that hasnt been mentioned here is the effect of the secondary intake kicking in.

Once the engine is ticking over nicely and you apply load (put it in gear) and begin to accelerate

the secondary intake opens up and bangs extra juice into the carb.

Now *IF* the secondaries open too soon the engine 'bogs' and stutters - even stalls - - because vital gas is taken away from the primary intake to the secondaries.

The solution is to replace the spring in the secondaries for a stiffer spring, which keeps em shut for a little longer...

Holley says the heavier the vehicle or engine the stiffer the spring should be.

Its fair to say that Broncos are a fairly 'heavy' application.

My recommend is get the Holley spring kit - part num 20-13 $10.99 most places and give it a go - its a easily swapped part and might just be yr answer.

I have just ordered my spring kit.

Best,

Monza.
