I have been serioulsy considering swapping my C-6 out for a MT. And i was assuming that getting a donor 80-86 f-150 would be the easiest route. being that there is a working manual tranny in the truck, this would be the easiest way to get all of the parts and linkages that are too expensive and hard to find other wise. i was wondering if 2wd and 4wd both had the same spacer between the trans case or drive shaft(2wd). also any suggestions on wether i should get a borg-warner 4 spd or Ford 5 spd W/ od

I just swaped my slipping C6 out for an NP435 this summer. It isn't too hard but I suggest you have something else to drive the weekend you swap it.

First you need a good tranny, I'd suggest either the NP435 (4 speed 1ton) or the ZF (5sp, again, 1 ton) Both of these trannies are about as tuff as will ever need be. If you just use your bronco to drive around town and such, the M5oD will be fine for you as it's a 5 sp w/od.

Then, you need the pedal assy. from an 80's F-series or Bronco. Make sure you get hydro as it's much better. Then you need a master cylinder, ***** cyl, and hose. (clutch components)

Next, get the flywheel (apx $60 from advanced auto) new. The 11" ford clutch to match your tranny. Also be sure you get the entire matched clutch kit (clutch pad, bearing, throwout, and the other part I forget the name.)

You will need to worry about a new custom crossmember with either of my suggested trannys. As well as new d/s because of the difference in length over stock. This is also when you may want to look into a better T-case as well. I have the NP205 and it's rock solid.

You will also need a new starter. (I learned the hard way they are different.) Also, do yourself a favor and buy an adjustible clutch rod from Ford. It's like $8 and will save you a TON of work.

Then put your truck on a lift, pull out all old drive train, replace with new as needed. Make sure to torque down the new flywheel properly. A tranny jack makes a huge difference as well. (Read I put the damn thing in on my back in the dirt...grrr.)

Also, beer, soda, or pizza to bribe friends to help you is a MUST!...lol

That's all I remember for now. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

Phil

thanks for the advice, i was leaning toward a 5 speed with o/d because i do take a lot of trips and i want to be able to cruise a little faster than 65. where did you get you replacement tranny, junkyard, new rebuilt, ebay? also about how much did it cost you. i have a couple of good junkyards in the area with a few f-150's and broncos, i know of at least two that they have that are stick shift but thats all. they do have an old wrecker, i think is 90 or so with stick shift. that would be a good strong tranny. I dont have a lift but i do have jack stands and a good slab. I am in no rush because the c-6 still works fine but it feels like i have fluid propultion. thanks for the advice. :)>-

Most likely that wrecker is that tranny you want. I imagine it's the ZF, which is 5 speed and tough as ****. It also has PTO ports that can be usefull later on for winches and such.

As far as where I got mine, I bought an old F-150 I'd seen sitting for about 6 years. I used the tranny, t-case, and both axles. Sold the 300 strait six for $400 and then sold my 9" from the Bronco for $100. I bought the donner truck for $150.

I also used the alloy rims and 33" BFG AT's.... :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Sometimes you luck out. I've spent a lot on the conversion but I've about broke even. My C-6 was shot pretty much, but a guy I know wanted it to put in his mustang after he rebuilt it so he did some computer work and still owes me some cash, but I loved the trade.

There are smaller 4 speeds that are OD, just not granny, and 5 speeds like the ZF and M5R2. The ZF is a 1 ton tranny and the M5R2 is a 1/2 ton. If you don't beat on it hard or put a lot of power the 1/2 ton will do you fine.

HTH Phil :)>-

I just replaced the c6 in my 85 bronco. Took all donor parts from one truck so I had all I need right next to me. The only expense I had was the Clutch Kit from the store. Everything else was good in the donor truck including the flywheel... Smooth as a babies you know where.
