Hey all,

I have a '94 bronco and I wanted to paint the hard top myself using spray paint. It's black so I was going to keep it black. I just wanted to know if anyone has spray painted their own top before and if so what type/king of paint did you use? Thanks for your help.

As a matter of fact, I am in the process of doing that to mine. I'm using touch up paint from AutoZone in a shaker can. It would probably be better to have someone paint it professionally, but the price is right and I have done large areas with shaker cans before and they come out looking just fine. Mine was a dingy, dirty, dull white. I am changing it to Ford Shadow Gray. In the process of preparing it I decided to sand it down so the surface was smooth rather than the mottled bump surface. I ran into a guy at work that has a Nite edition Bronco. He sanded his down and put a nice gloss black on it. The main thing, as in all painting is the surface preparation. The better it is, the better the finished product looks.

Good luck,

:)>-

I have been a automotive painter for over 35 years. Spray can with out a doubt cheaper way too go. I have found over the years SEM has very good products for going that route. Needs to be preped wright no matter if you rattle can your top or spray it with a better quality automotive paint. If you want to leave the texture a 3M scotch brite and Comet with water will work ok. Dont let the comet dry on the top, keep it wet, rinse with plenty of water. Then after the top is dry use some wax amd grease remover. If you go with a quality auto paint you can get a matting agent in your color. With the matting agent you vary your gloss level. Flat to semi- gloss. Seek out some info from your local auto paint supplier.

I personally just bedliner mine. It was done with bedliner years ago, and still looks great (and is tough!). Really no wrong way to apply it..and when it's time for a fresh coat, just clean it an slap it on
