I am BRAND new to the site but have done a little research on Bronco's. I am looking to purchase a Bronco in the VERY near future but have a couple of questions. First concern is engine wise, I believe I read somewhere that the fuel injected Bronco wasn't introduced til 85. Now that is okay, but since I've only built import tuners I know nothing about carbs. I have a 1980 Bronco under my eye that has the 302, the owner claims it has a Holley 600 4 barrel carb. What does this mean? I have tried researching the specs of this year Bronco but can't seem to find one, can anyone help here? My next question is what parts would I need to convert to the tailgate spare tire? Thanks for reading guys, sry to sound so new but the easiest way to learn is to ask...

When he says it's got a Holley 600cfm 4-bbl what he means is that the carb has been replaced/upgraded. Most of the carb'd Bronco's came with 2-bbl carbs in the 300-400cfm range & the factory 4-bbl was somewhere around 530cfm. Basically he's telling you the carb was replaced with a slightly larger aftermarket one from Holley. It's not a particular plus or minus overall (there are positives & negatives to having a larger Holley 4bbl carb but in this case they pretty much balance out) it's just info to file away. I wouldn't be impressed enough to spend any extra cash over it, after almost 25yrs *someone* should have replaced the damn carb (if he's also added an aluminum intake, cam & headers as well that's a different story)

As far as the swing-away tire carrier goes. You can't.

Bronco's with swing-away carriers were ordered that way from the factory and have specifically reinforced quarter panels. Try putting one of those carriers on a non-swing-away truck and you'll tear up the quarter pretty quick & probably lose your spare somewhere on the trail or highway when it lets go. If you really want to mount the spare outside then go for a receiver hitch mounted spare carrier, they're much better at handling the extra weight of oversize tires and don't tear up the truck & tailgate like the swing-aways do. Most Broncos with them have rips & tears at the quarter panel mounting points (that lets in water & they usually start to rust badly right there because of it) as well as tailgates that are warped & dented around the tire latch. Some guys like them but most guys who have one wish theirs hadn't come with it.

Am I the only one who suddenly feels very old....LOL. I have the same problem but it is with fuel injection. I don't know a single thing about it but can rebuild a carb and do what needs to be done there.

Keep us posted on your purchase.

YEAH!! I was just logging on to ask a question along the same lines...

So, it is common for the spare tire mount to cause damage the tailgate??

I was replacing all my window and top (top seals is another topic on it's own) seals last year, and I had to weld the damned skin back on the tailgate where it split away at the edges... and I'm sure the problem is exacerbated by the oversized tire/wheel hangin' there, eh?

Well now I was unloading some stuff today and realized it's coming loose on the passenger side again...Argh!! Time to reinforce I guess! Convenient idea, but a pain it the **** now.

I'm on the opposite page, I just added a spare tire carrier to my 1982 Bronco.

My parts Bronco had one and I like having the spare tire out of the way. I used flat steel plates behind the skin, top and bottom and grade 8 bolts to bolt it up. I don't offroad it except to haul mulch, so I think it will hold up.

Oktogo, was that a question? If so, No, I'm not giving up that easily... Mine's a factory swing-away, and I'm gonna make it work the way it should... which, apparently will require further mods. The idea was right, the factory implementation was a little lacking, so I'm fixin' it!

We All know that the factory engineering, in many cases, on most vehicles, can leave a little to be desired... They're not hand built! That's our job!

What about a 35". I got to make a 600 mile road trip and was thinking I could put my spare back on the Factory Holder... Will it hold just for Interstate purposes.?

Yup, had the same thing happen with one of my 78's. The corner was cracked & in poor shape. Was at Wal-Mart one day & when I went to open the tailgate i didn't keep a good hold on the spare, it swung out & away from me and when it hit the stop it literally peeled the quarter panel half-way off the truck as the 38" tire & carrier fell to the ground. Not my best moment :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> Since then I have *strongly* recommended to anyone willing to listen that the stock 31" tire is really about the limit for those things.

If you *had* to use it for a large tire on a short trip it'll probably be just fine but I wouldn't make a practice out of it and I certainly wouldn't go out 4-wheeling with one on there. Not anymore at least.

Man...see that is the kind of thing that forces you to just stand there and stare at it....wondering wether to cuss or just drive off and drag it home.
