My '80 4.9L6 had a similar problem, someone rebuilt the carb before I bought the truck. The screws that hold the various pieces together in the carb "stack" had all vibrated loose creating all kinds of air and vacuum leaks. Tighten up all the screws to the proper torque. Second problem was that who ever had rebuilt the carb also turned the air cleaner stud too far into the barrel forcing the choke plate to a permanently open position. Also make sure gasket material isn't blocking the action of the float, jets, vacuum passages, etc.

Good luck. You'll love the L6. I had one in an '82 F150 that I used for Search & Rescue and it never let me down.

The problem may not be your carb at all. If it won't start while hot, but will when it cools off, I'd suspect that the pickup in the distributor might be acting up.

Good luck,
