A true flush will be about 12-14 and if you went swimming, I suggest you do a complete flush including the converter and cooler. A drain and fill is only about 6.

Can you even drain the converter anymore ? I seem to remember photos on a site somewhere documenting how Ford stopped using drainplugs on the converters. For a few years they just spot welded a small circular tab over the drain hole but once they worked their way thru all the converters that had been in the pipeline when the decision was made they started equiping everyone with converters having no drain hole at all. I forget when it started & what the crossover years were but I reading about E4OD's and such so I think it was a late 80's-90's thing.

Filters are tranny-specific. You'll get one from behind the counter at the parts store. It''' be a kinda square looking thing sorta like a CD case and they usually just snap into place on the end of the drain tube in the tranny. When you drop the pan you'll see it right there. You CAN of course get an aftermarket spin-on type filter that you plumb in-line just like a cooler.

$50 from Summit. *I'M* putting one on mine along w/the aux cooler when I put in the new tranny.

Exactly, just walk in & tell 'em what you've got & they'll hand you a box with what you need. You should have the same AOD that I have (matter of fact I'll even let ya have the scorched one in mine right now if you want a really cool paperweight or a centerpiece for your next Xmas dinner) If you want bring it over & I'll change it with you. You'll need to go to the parts store anyways to get the pan gasket, lot of times they have a kit with the gasket & filter so make a few calls before you run out & grab one. Better still I'll post again tomorrow because I need the very same thing for mine since I need to change the fluid & filter on my new(used) tranny when I put it in so I need to make a few calls myself to find who has what & I'll let you know what I find out.

Well it's my understanding that the total fluid capacity of the AOD is 14qts. HOWEVER, I would take the time to ck w/your shop teacher and get *his* opinion because some of the flushing machines need a bit more depending on how they work. I have YET to see a flush machine that *completely* empties a transmission & refills it with clean fluid in one shot. Most of them pump out as much as they can & then add new fluid (maybe 80% new & 20% old & $hitty) and then run the same process once or twice more to get as close to 100% new fluid as they can reasonably expect & STILL charge you the big bux in good faith. Might be that your teach says to bring in 20qts to do the job. I'd ask him (or maybe *her* since we're such a progressive society)

I made a couple calls earlier about the filter & gasket kits. Bennet has them for $10.18, none in stock but it'll only take them a day or two to get a couple. Advance has 'em for $8.98 in-stock but I just don't like them very much. I've gone thru THREE starters from Advance in the last few months and the one that's in there *now* has a bad throw-out bearing ( Had them test the last 2 that they gave me before I took them out the door & they were good at the time but lasted less than 2wks when actually turning an engine) and their counter help does NOT inspire my confidence. The phone call went like this:

Me: Yeah, Hi. I'm looking for a price on a transmission filter & gasket kit for an 88' Bronco, 302, automatic, AOD tranny.

Advance: Sure, what kinda car was that ?

Me: It's a truck, 88' Bronco, 302, auto, AOD.

Advance: Is that 2 wheel drive ?

Me: Uh, no. It's a full size Bronco

Advance: Yeah but is it 2WD or 4WD ?

Me: It's 4WD, 88' Bronco, 302, automatic w/an AOD transmission. They never made a 2WD.

Advance: Ok yeah, ok, is that a full size or a BroncoII ?

Me: Yeah, uhm, just like I said *Bronco*, it's a full-size. 302 with an AOD

Advance: Great, got it, hang on.

---3 minute wait---

Advance: Hey, is that a 5 liter or a 5.8 ?

Me: It's a 302.

Advance: Cool, so it's a 5.8 ?

Me: Uh, no. It's a 5.0. A 351 would be a 5.8, but they both used AOD's so I don't think it really matters.

Advance: Oh really ? Cool dude, Yeah, we've got 'em for $8.98. You want me to set one aside for you ?

Me: No thanks, I just wanted the price for now.

Advance: Whatever dude--click.

Are these kids on quaaludes or what ?

Generally speaking I'd have been fairly upset dealing with a freaking ***** like that & I'd be complaining about corp. drug testing policies and such, BUT, seeing as how my *boys* went an NFL record 16-0 (take THAT ya freaking fish. 16-0 beats 14-0 in anyones book. *especially* in an era of 325# linebackers & I won't even comment on how easy the 72' schedule was by comparison) today I'm happy to just open another cold one and let an idiot be an idiot. The shame of it is that you know these kids have an opportunity to learn a lot working for a parts store but all they do with it is read what's on the computer screen in front of them and they never even seem to showw a *spark* of knowledge. If it's not in the computer than they don't know it, it used to be that your local parts guy was a fountain of knowledge, now he just parrots what the computer prompts him to ask

Hey man, I get it, really I do. I KNOW it's tough to work the parts counter, but at the same time I expect a guy to *listen* to the answer when he askes me a question and I also assume that he's gonna have a little basic knowledge and I find it *VERY* frustrating when a guy is obviously just asking what the computer screen tells him to ask instead of showing me he knows his a$$ from his elbow. Now I certainly understand that I'm periodically going to get the guy who's brand-new and doesn't know Jack but at the same time I expect this same clueless individual to be *wanting* to learn more and to better understand his chosen profession. If I get some kid on the phone who really doesn't want to be there and he chooses to make this fact *exceptionally* clear to me then you really can't blame me for spending an extra $2.25 going to someplace with counterhelp that's actually *interested* in helping me now can you ?

I've spent more than my fair share of time working in speed shops and I KNOW it can be a hassle answering the phones, but I also know that you should take a certain ammount of pride in the fact that you *know* what you're talking about and you should SOUND like you know what you're talking about when you're speaking with a customer. even if you *don't* know what you're talking about, the LAST thing the owner wants you to do is to just hang up on someone just because he isn't going to come right down and buy the part he asked about right this moment.

I can *understand* that I got a kid who just didn't know a whole lot about what he was discussing, but that doesn't excuse his behavior in my book. You don't disrespect someone & hang up on them just because they don't whip out a credit card right after you've given them poor service. I can laugh about it but that doesn't mean I'm going to spend my money there.
