Yeah...Ford had a tsb for the firewall cracking on the manual trannys. Purchase this and put it on. As far as the pedals, take the entire assy out of the thing and swap it over at the same time you do the column and you will be slick. There is a plate in the floor that unbolts to cover the stick shift. Take it out and swap it over and you will be set.

That part ford sells is a small plate that goes around the ***** cyl and bolts to the firewall. Its a small price to pay for the pice of mind. Its kind of a PITA cause you have to drill holes but it works okay.

What does this prevent? How does a manual tranny crack the firewall? I'm just curious because I have a manual and I've never heard of this before. Sounds like something important to know.

bronco86, my advice would be to first find out what type of 4-speed OD manual the 85 has. It may not be worth the trouble of swapping it into your 86, especially if you have an automatic. The SROD and TOD trannies are not known for reliabilty and strength. I'm not familiar with all of the TSB's (technical service bulletins), but if Ford has one for that problem, it's worth looking into.

Oh? Have I been called out? Lets look at the facts. 1) I never said anything about the tranny its self. It was a matter of symatics. What I ment was manual transmission vehicles. 2) Where did I say the tranny hit the firewall? I did not. 3)You dont know me well enough to **** where I post. I can give you part numbers and detailed instrurctions and pictures of the thing already in place on my 84.

For those of you who are just interested in the OTHER subject I will clairify. On the manual tranny EQUIPED vehicles, the ***** cyl bolts to the firewall. The firewall flexes each time you press the clutch pedal. Since it is relocated near the tunnel of the vehicle, the metal is weaker there because it is near the edge of the piece (I think). The plate reinforces the firewall and bolts to it making it stronger. If you really need pics, I can post them and get you the part number. For the guy who is calling my bluff, why dont you ask a Ford certified tech? Oh...your reading a post from one...

Well someones got there ******* in a knot . I would like to see some pics of the ***** cylinder mounted to the bottom of the cab tunnel . I have scrapped and worked on many many many ford trucks and broncos hands on not in a service manual and I have never ever seen a ***** cylinder mounted to the bottom of the tunnel there always mounted to the left of the brake booster and for that matter the metal is 3 layers thick there to prevent it from cracking or breaking . How does the ***** cylinder arm mounted the the pedal being way down there . The pedal must be harder than **** to push being that by mounting it down there you have lost damn near all mechanical advantage . As for the certification theres certified broom pushers at GM,FORD,CHRYSTLER , just because there certified does it mean there qualified ? Maybe Im just in a bad mood but this post struck me wrong I dont talk shit if I dont know something or am unsure of something I will remain silent till I research it and educate myself . If I am sure of something then I will speak up there are people here looking for advise because they dont know and they shouldnt be steered the wrong way because someones sisters brothers , inlaw said they made a 300 six that would run the quarter in 3 sec . So Chris Im posting my pics and am waiting for yours . :D

I had to go back and read my post again to see what you were talking about. I didnt say it was at the bottom of the tunnel. I said it was at the side. This is confirmed clearly by your second picture. If I go to my dads house tomorrow (and remember the camera) I will get pics of the thing already installed.

Oh...and it wasnt a 300...

Oh, and in the event that I DO forget the camera, I dug out the box the plate came in. The part number is E3TZ-7K509-A. It reads reinforcement kit for those who are interested, but what would I know, I just have put them on before, including mine.
