It's been awhile, someone once sang. In that while I've managed to solve any and all challenges my W.I.P has presented. Mainly due to the wealth of knowledge on these pages or links contained therein. So now I come to y'all with a 3G Alt quandary.

A few electrical add-ons have exposed the stock alt's limits. Time to get a 3G on board. Having done some research it appeared that a late 90's Taurus 3.8 V6 had the hot set-up. Grabbed one from the local PnP. The unit mounts in the 4.9l bracket without having to notch it, um thought notching was required. Next the clocking was off. Read that it was no whoop to re-clock it. Removed the 3 bolts then proceeded to rotate the cases. Wrong. Snapped the 6 winding wires. Freed up the cases came apart. The windings were pressed(?) to the case. That's when I knew I knew nothing. So,

1)What is the correct 3G alt for 4.9l?

2)How do you properly clock a alt?

3)Can the one I broke be salvaged?

YO S!

It happens to a lot of us...I break 1/2 of what I touch; here is some info for you;

3G Bronco, Interchange FactsSource: by Clarko

EXCERPT: "...If you have a Pre 86 Truck, pre 79 Mustang: or anything with v-belts, you'll probably need a Pivot Mount w/ 8.25” ear spacing alternator. Please measure your current alt as you may need the Pivot Mount w/ 7.00” ear spacing alternator. Some 90, any 91-92, and some 93-99 non DOHC Ford Taurus will be able to donate it's alternator to your vehicle.

The Pivot Mount w/ 8.25” ear spacing can be swapped into:

1966-1986 V-belt Mustangs

1966-1987 V-Belt Broncos/E-Series/F-series

1992-1997 4.9L & 7.5L Bronco/F-Series/E-Series

Other V-belt vehicles that can adjust to an 8.25” wide Pivot mount alternator

A wide-eared Taurus alt will ONLY fit a 302 or 351W if it is a V-belt setup since it's wider than a serpentine one.

Read much more w/pics...!

Plug Clocking: Each style may have the rear plugs clocked 3 different ways to fit their various vehicles better. They will still fit no matter the clocking but you can remove the case bolts, and reclock the rear to get your optimum position..."

I always thought that the stator was pressed-in too. But, anyway, push the stator out from the front.

Don't pry the cases apart like this; spreading.gif
