Any ideas? Tailgate window works fine via dashboard switch but not keyed switch on tailgate. Replaced with new switch, but still not working. ???

The circuit breakers for your rear window are in fuse position 12, and 14. Do a continuity check on these to make sure they are good.

Did you replace the dash switch, or the tailgate switches? In my '89, I have to replace the whole tailgate harness just to get the switches.

Right fuse 12 controls the tailgate when the key switch is used. Since it works with the driver switch it is most likely the fuse. That fuse also controlls the Power locks. There are a couple of connectors enroute from the fuse to the tailgat, one under the dash and one on the left hand side of the frame at the rear crossmember. Another common problem is a broken wire in the bundle that comes out the left side by the tail light to the tail gate, in this case a black wire with a white stripe. This wire is hot at all times, so if you have a meter, take a pin and pierce it and then check to see that you have 12V at the tailgate switch.

Good luck,

:)>-

Thanks. First, since #12 fuse also controls the door locks and they are working I ruled that out as a problem. Next, since I replaced the entire harness (that includes the keyed switch in the tailgate) I presumed there was no wiring break around the taillight lens. I then checked the next connector - near the top of the rear frame rail- and found that there is no power coming through that connection - except for when the dashboard switch is operated. In other words there is no constant power source for the keyed switch to use. I haven't spotted any breaks in the wiring under the chassic, but will look again tomorrow since it's getting near dark here. And, I'll also see if I can see anything obviously wrong under the dash.

Any other ideas?

Pull the circuit breaker in #14 fuse position, and see if you have power there. If you do, start working towards the back. If you don't go toward the engine compartment. The 2 wires you should be tracing are Black/White stripe, and should be hot at all times.

DONE!!!

Found a corroded break in the b/w wire under the chassis. I had forgotten that the previous owner had installed some kind of running lights that were part of the old steps. He probablyl tapped into the wire at this point to get power for the lights and the wire corroded after removal of the lights.

Anyway, I'm now an experienced tailgate wire harness remover/installer.
