i have a 92 F150 w/302. the 302 went bad so i took a 351w out of a 89 F250 and put it in the 92 F150. before i pulled the 351 out it ran great , after i put it in the 92 i noticed the timing was off. tried to ajust but could not get it correct. i was told 351w's are 6 degrees btdc. it runs pretty good about 35 degrees btdc. the closer i get to 6 degrees it does not want to run at all.

Sounds like you are running ritch. A very rich burn takes longer to burn hence the super advanced timing. Try putting some new injectors in or use some fuel system cleaner to chase all of the gunk out of the fuel system. you could have bad atomisation. also check that you are getting proper pressure form you fuel pump.

Ford harmonic balancers are notorious for the outside ring to slip on the inner part, which causes your timing marks to be way off. Eventually the outer ring can actually come off and wear into the timing cover. I would bet that this is your problem, unless you are not unplugging the spout connector (little grey plastic part plugged into wiring harness near distributor) before checking the timing.
