I have that same problem with my 90 bronco....the mechanic I talked to said it has to do with the vent pipe....if there's any blockage, it'll act funny after so many fumes trying to leak out....I got mine fixed and haven't had a problem since

When my tank strap broke and tore the filler tube up i accidently kinked up the vent while putting a new filler (wasnt formed so that didnt help)tube on and it took like 10 minutes to put in 5 dollars worth, and when i cut off the straight one to put a junkyard one on i slashed the vent in half by accident but it fills fine now. Just cant keep going once the gas pump kicks off unless i want to get hosed. Good luck and be safe around the tank...

That is usually caused by the vent pipe comming loose and not being in place. You have to remove the filler tube and reattach the vent pipe that is inside the filler pipe. It's about a 1/2 hour job. If you need a proceedure let me know.

Good luck,
