your steering gear looks like a manual steering gear box with some kind of power assist bolted to the back of it

"...in my pictures you can see the black pump"

I think you mean "steering box" not pump (pump has v-belt runn'n it)

That.., (the black thing) looks like a chevy steering box...or the like. (that extension is normal)(maybe Toyota) If it's strongly mounted.... & not loose or worn, then you can work with it. (assuming everything fr. the box to the wheels is functioning properly.) ALSO, is that a Ford or some other steer. column.?

"...if someone knows what kind of shaft do i need to buy to replace the piece of crap that is in there"

Is it loose.., stiff.., bad.., or in some way not functioning.?

That "bell" joint at the upper end is easily re-buildable.

----or-----

The upper shaft can be cust. made then attached with any of several aft. mkt. U-joints.

Need your signature page filled in & more info. please.., that would help.

ok so its a hydrolic assist. i cant find any parts for it anywhere, or even what kind it is or what it came off of. it leaks like a siv, so im thinking it would be easier to just buy a different pump. i heard one off of a f100 would work? and the steering column i have no idea what its off of but its not the right one and is loose as ****. i could rebuild the bell joint and i think that wouldtake care of that. or maybe i should just take the assist out and stick with just the manual steering box and buy a whole new steering shaft.

Well, yes & no...all power steering is "hydraulic"----yours is simply a "mix-n-match" power steering set-up.

".. steering column i have no idea what its off of but its not the right one and is loose as ****."

Steering column is everything fr. the steering wheel down thru the firewall to just a few inches past the firewall, under hood... Are we on the same page here..? If so, are you saying all of this wiggles..?

"i cant find any parts for it anywhere, or even what kind it is or what it came off of"

This info isn't going to jump out atcha..! It's going to take some effort. Stop at a good auto parts store & they will identify these items for you.

"it leaks like a siv, so im thinking it would be easier to just buy a different pump"

Now exactly what are we talking about here..? The "pump" is the round thingie on the eng. with a v-belt & pully.

Sooooo..., where is it leaking from...the pump.., the hoses.., or the steering gearbox..?

".. i could rebuild the bell joint and i think that would take care of that."

Yes.., if it's the "shaft" that's loose....not the whole column...as you stated above.

"or maybe i should just take the assist out and stick with just the manual steering box and buy a whole new steering shaft."

I'm guessing you don't have any of these parts...this solution would be nearly as expensive as a used factory pwr. steering set-up.

"i heard one off of a f100 would work?"

This isn't cheap or easy either...& the "stock" set-up is prefered.

OBVIOUSLY.., you're frustrated but these problems come with all pre-owned vehicles...especially 4x4's.

"CHILL" & take it a step at a time & have fun with it.... :D/

If I could see it.., I could tell you if it's safe & fixable...but so could any "good" mechanic in your area.

If it's not save/repairable (cheapest way)... then I would go with a good used "stock" EB column.., new or used upper & lower shafts & U-joints.., & a "stock" power steering gearbox. (the pump, pullys, belt, hoses, & brackets are already there)

This could run in the $1000 range....or as little as $4-5 hundred.

I'm guessing your "column" is "stock" EB...but you're calling that homemade shaft a column.

Your 1st step should be to a book store.., or the library to varify terminology, etc. This would net you much easier, faster, & more correct help. :-B

" i just bought this thing" Be careful with this....  B)

thanks Bully Bob. you been alot of help. and you have this way of explaining stuff to me that kinda makes me sound like a ****** and not know anything about anything. I work on Apache, Blackhawk, chinnook helicopters, engines, and sheetmetal. I been an engine mechanic in 3 different dealerships, construction pretty much all my life as a equipment mechanic. ive made 100,000 dollar tools, ive custom made ***** bars for harley and sold them right back to them. I can pretty much build anything or fix anything, i have the tools and the ability. all i really wanted to know is what this thing was cause ive never even looked at a bronco till i bought this one. But really you have helped alot. i just think im gonna fix this assist thingy majiggy, and rebuild the bell joint cause it is wore out, and the " column" has about an inch of play when i pull on the steering wheel, so im thinkin ill rebuild that too then the steering wheel wont come off in my hand while im driving.

Outstanding Resume....!!

Congratulations on your successes...you shouldn't have any problems gett'n that system to work then.

PLEASE stand by, on this board...& offer up some help. (I could use a break)

Understand, the EB is an "old-school" rig.....nothing mysterous here. They've (maybe) been 'round longer than you.

Everything on them (& most all 4x4's & trucks) has been in service since the 50's & 60's (& still going) so it will be a "cake walk" with your experience.

To Quote Seabronc..."if you think you know what I thought I said...then I know you said what I think I mean" Etc., etc. !!!

(typical of the communications)

"i know its power steering cause im that that dumb"

Did you re-read your initial question....? /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

It's NOT easy trying to read between the lines on this boards questions...... I guess I'm the only one dumb enough to try & help these folks.........

So PLEASE.....with your background, jump in & help out here...........!!!

And.., keep in mind, it's always "tongue-in-cheek" so don't take the world serious... ^_^ /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

BTW...I looked at my old manual steering box....& like 'JLasvegas' & '7bronco1' said...it could very well be a machined & adapted GM (or some other mfgr. or ram assist) nose --on the orig. manual box. ....good luck with that...??

B
