I have a 78 bronco with a 351M engine and a c6 auto, I want to put a 5speed manual O.D. trans in, I have found one out of a late 80s early 90s F250 4WD with a 460 in it, I know it will bolt up to my engine but i'm not sure about the 205 tcase. Any info on this would be helpfull.

Yes, any of the Ford t-cases share the same bolt pattern for the various Ford trannies. Only concern is the tranny output shaft length and shifter linkage unique to each tranny/t-case combo. JSM84

The overall length of the NP205 (in fixed output yoke versions) is about 12-13" from the front of the case to the center of the output yoke.

from Transfer Case, New Process (NP) 205 Swap to a BW1356 in a 78 Source: by Mike M (MRM) at medicine.wisc.edu

Full Sized Ford transfercase info:

From 1978 though 1996 the 3 most common part-time transfer cases Ford used were the NP205, NP208, and BW1356. They all use the same circular 6 bolt mounting pattern. They also all have the same splined input shaft. This means that all three are interchangable. Of course nothing is that simple, and there are a few gotchas that you need to consider before swapping. Ok found it...

"A ZF transmission that is mainly talked about is the 5-speed manual transmission that comes in the 88' or newer F-250 to 450. There are two versions, 95 and later and 88' to 95'. Not much difference between these, just the newer ones are rated for higher torque. There is a difference in the gear ratio for the gas and deisel version, closer ratio for the diesel and wider ratio for the gas. They are very heavy duty transmissions that are fully synchronized for easier shifting. This has started to be a favorite swap for people, because of the problems with the automatics and they bolt right to the small blocks( ie.289, 302, 351, 400). I have just found out that it will directly bolt to an NP205 t-case (bullet proof) and also the NP208. It also has the desired low range first gear (that off-roaders like), while maintaining a 5th gear that allows for you to drive on the highway without you engine over reving. I am hopeing that this will be an fairly easy process to bolt these thing together, and am not worried about the fabrication off the mounting pieces, but there is some fab. to be done to get one to fit in a Early Bronco, but have heard that it is fairly simple for the 80+ trucks. This is prob. more than you wanted to know, but hope it covers the main points" by murphy

great info on the trany swap I have the 5speed out of the 4x4 pickup now and only thing that might hang me up is the size of the input shaft on tranny, close as i can tell the 5speed measures around "1 1/4 and the old 4 speeds only measure bout "1 1/16, hoping it's just a simple clutchplate change, prolbly gonna go with the centerforce flywheel and clutch, allthough if you have any ideas for a cheaper way to go please let me know.

also the tranny I ended up with is out of a 95 F250 with the 460 engine, sounds like I got the better one. ^_^ /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

I'll let you know how this goes

the zf is about 2.5 inches shorter than the c6, I'm aborting this project for now because of some hang ups, first off the zf is huge and won't fit under the floor pan without a body lift or modifying the floor pan. second the input shaft is too short on them to reach the 351M/400 pilot bearing good enough and the the flywhell is thinner on the 351M as well so the input shaft doesn't reach the clutch plate real good either. would probly work with a 460 as the crank sticks out of the back of the engine farther than a 351.
