Hey guys,

I have a '90 302 with a 4 speed OD tranny.

I am getting a little bit of a whine from it. It sounds similar to when your power steering pump is low on fluid, but the pitch of the sound increases with accelleration.

I *think* it is a little slow engauging first gear.

It shifts fine, and seems strong otherwise.

The fluid level is normal.

Would a fluid change typically clear up such issues?

Thanks

joe

A fluid change or complete flush along with a new filter would be my first suggestion, since any "whine" is not normal. The tranny is the E4OD in the Bronco, JSM84

Thanks JSM84, by any chance do you happen to know how many pints, or quarts it will take to change the fluid?

Thanks again,

joe

Joe,

How sure are you that it's transmission related ? Is the whine rising in sync with the revs & then dropping off when it shifts only to rise again as the revs do ? What are the chances it's an accessory like the water pump or PS pump doing this ? Maybe a bad idler pulley or something along those lines ? Like JSM said, it's certainly NOT a normal transmission sound and a fluid & filter change never hurt anything that's for sure. The tranny *does* have a pump in it so it's at least possible it could be making this noise but it's certainly not a normal transmission sound (****, it's not even an *ab-normal* transmission sound)

I'm not sure what you have or what it's capacity is. I'll be able to tell you in a few days what an AOD takes, but if you drain the torque converter (which you should) you're looking at something in the neighborhood of 11qts

as our good pals JSM & Bill have advised, the fluid (& TC) flush n' fill w/filter change may do da job

If no change, some worse cases;

From bellhousing - failing pump or input area bearing

In all gears except 3rd - Planetary gear component problem

All gears all the time - Bearing or bushing failure, in the output shaft area.

GL!
