Hi guys, hope your holidays are going well.

I am not sure what the part is called but am having trouble with my 1970 bronco 4 wheel drive lever. The lever will not stay in neutral which I assume is where it needs to be to keep the two wheel drive and the 3 speed on the floors drivetrain to operate fully. When I removed the plastic case (where the T-shifter of the 4 wheel drive sits) I noticed the notches between neutral and the other positions like 2h are grinded down so the bar is slipping in and out and between neutral and other gears. I called some trans shops and they were unhelpful. Has anyone experienced this problem and/or found a way to fix this problem. Do I need to buy the whole setup somewhere with a new t-bar and the wheel with the teeth on it (no idea the name of this piece)? Thanks for the help.

To start out with, the transfer case has to be in gear (2wd, 4H or 4L) to have the vehicle driveable. If you have it in neutral then it is just like having your transmission in neutral. As for the transfer case handle and the notches, those really are pretty worthless. All they are there for is for the spring loaded pin in the handle of the shifter. I don't even have that pin in my daily driver anymore, but the deal with the tabs is that it was supposed to stop the shifter. To me, it sounds like your transmission shifter is kicking the shift rails out of gear. Is it a Duff or Hurst floor shifter? If it is, then you have the same problem I have with my other Bronco, and you need to adjust the linkage on the transmission shifter and get the slop out of it. Basically you have to take the shifter off and reset it up. Hope that answers your question.

See I was told that it needed to be in neutral for the 3 speed manual to work correctly, so is there a proper position for the 4 wheel drive to sit in even when I am not using it. And I have a hurst 3 speed manual hurst floor shifter but I think the t-handle is stock on the 70 bronco. So if I change the linkage and get the slop out will the 4 wheel drive sit in gear instead of move around more easily? or will I still need to replace the part with the teeth and springs to get it to stop moving around the gears?

Thanks for you help again and happy new year.

is it stuck in nuetral? if you can get the truck rolling. maybe down the driveway or something. sometimes mine gets stuck in 4wd and when i take it around the block or at least get the truck moving i can get it back into 2wd. but im not sure if thats what your problem is. S-bolt knows his facts id talk to him....

"See I was told that it needed to be in neutral for the 3 speed manual to work correctly"

Neutral on the "T" shifter is just so one has a knowledge of where he is starting from.. i.e. a starting point.

FROM NEUTRAL... One "click/position" all the way forward is 4WD "low"

From neutral.......One " position" .......back is 2WD "high"

From neutral.......Two " positions" ......all the way back is 4WD "high"

"so is there a proper position for the 4 wheel drive to sit in even when I am not using it"

YES.... 2WD "high" when normal/highway driving. (hubs unlocked as well)

"Do I need to buy the whole setup somewhere with a new t-bar and the wheel with the teeth on it (no idea the name of this piece)?"

If you contact JBG or any other EB parts house.....they will get you the used parts you need to get your shifter to "stop" in the proper indents. B)
