From what you describe, he must have automatic hubs which engage when the transfer case is put in 4x4. When taking it out of 4x4 it is necessary to reverse direction for about 10 feet to disengage them. There is nothing wrong with a NP 208 transfer case, there are thousands of Broncos with them installed. Personally, if I were to buy that truck would be to immediately convert from auto hubs to manual hubs. For someone that has never done it the job takes about an hour for the first one and 15 minutes for the second one. No mater what, both require that the transfer case be shifted from 2x4 to 4x4. Usually the procedure is still stuck to the back side of the driver sun visor. Follow the procedure, it is especially important if trying to go to 4x4 LO.

Good luck,

:)>-

You are saying that 78/79s had a full time option? It is not there for the 80's on, atleast it is not in the service manuals I have. Perhaps that disappeared with TTB. Ya learn something new every day  Oh well, 70spoiler, :^o ignore what I said if he indeed has full time, the comment on NP208 still stands. It is a good transfer case. B)

i did the same swap in a 79 both driveshafts are different lengths and youll need the 205 specific shifter/ adapter housing. the uotput shaft on the transmision was also different (the 203 shaft was too short) if you have everything its a bolt in swap for anyone wondering the 203 is a full time transfer with a differential its the biggest case offered made of cast iron with chain drive its very heavy and used solid drive flanges instead of manual/ auto lockouts on the front axle

if you had the choice, which you do, i would in no way trake the 205 off, thats one of the best stock cases out there for fords, all that all time 4wd is going to give you, is way worse gas mileage and many faster worn out parts, do yourself a favor, convert it to manual hubs and keep or put back on the 205
