I would be interested in beefing up the 170. I live in Oklahoma so there aren't to many large hills but I do wanna be able to go up the ones there are and I dont plan on dumping it into a mud pit but I do Duck hunt so I get into some soup every now and then and we get about 2 ft of snow tops along with Ice. I will drive it where ever I go in it so High way miles will need to be put on it so I'm looking for highway speeds to at least 65 to 70 with out sounding like I am gonna blow it up. I plan on a 3 1/2 in suspension lift with a 1" body. I dont plan on cutting the fenders so I wont be putting over 33's on the wheels probably 31's. I am just looking for ideas and suggestions about the motor with out breaking the bank right off the bat with motor and tranny. I m open to suggestions though so any help or ideas you have I am open ears. Thanks again for your help.

Might want to upgrade the cam and maybe add a header w/ exhaust. What gears are you running?

Tuning a rig to your specific needs takes a bit of research/planning.

76 just mentioned 4 important points.

Keep in mind the performance stores 1st. motavation is to sell you as much "hop-up" mods as poss. ... not necessarly just what you need.

I think 31's would fit in the rear without cutting...don't think 33's will. (someone with exp. runn'n un-cut with bigger tires will have to chime-in on that)

However a firm commitment to tire size is a must, as other mods must work with that size. (axle gearing for example)

What's the cond. of the 170..? Is it orig., a run-out., or already been re-built.? The stock 170 had 105HP & very good torque. Are the other acc. on the eng. stock..? exh., carb., ignition...?

A compression test is cheap (at home) & will give you a clue as to where to start.

This project could take several posts here... not a problem. >:D< <'>

Check out http://www.cliffordperformance.net They specialize in I-6 engines. (use "Ford 200" for 170 products)

These Ford I-6 eng. can be run at 6000+RPM They have several main bearings & run quite smooth. They're used in many racing brackets.

Google/Yahoo Ford inline engines & you'll find lots of good info.

B4 going any further., we need to know the cond. of that exist. 170.

The 170 looks original along with almost everything else. I bought the the bronco from the original owners son. It starts with a bump of the key and drives well. It was well taken care of. The only non original thing on it was the son had it pin striped for his dad 20 years ago along with the windows tinted.

Hay Red..,

That's good news., The carb. would then be an Autolite 1V.

I assume no P/S.

A solid eng. is necessary B/4 trying to get more power out of it.

RU a good Mech. ?? The 3.5 & 1" lift req. some additional mods.

Do you know what gear sets are in the axles...? Most likely 411's but some were different, like 350's.

Like "76" said you can start with "split" headers., (don't think you need a cam change at this point, for the headers but cliffords would know) Maybe an RV cam later.

And, dual pipes & ****. exiting behind the RR wheel.

$-) This isn't cheap., but eng. will breathe much better.

Mine is set-up this way and., when I hit 65mph then up from there., it's like a whole diff. eng.

I really recom. a compression test just to be comfortable you're not throwing good $$ after bad.... :-B

Now I can Get a 302 v8 and tranny for 650 on average here where I am from. They are a dime a dozen I am just wondering if beefing up the 170 would be more cost effective than buying a stock 302 with a four speed tranny. If I can get good power out of the 170 though where I could keep up with the demands I might face in the woods then I would love to keep it. I am a fairly decent mechanic but I am new to the Bronco world so I dont know what cost I am looking at after I buy a 302 to install it. Plus it would be pretty awesome to tell my buddies that a 170 in-line six just got into the backwoods where we hunt.

Nothing magical here., EB's are "old school" technology..nothing you can't take off, fix & repl.

".....awesome to tell my buddies that a 170 in-line six just got into the backwoods where we hunt."

These rigs have been doing just that for 45 yrs. The first IH Scouts did it with 4 bangers & pretty much the same size veh.

For the V/8 you need everything fr. the Rad. back to the T-case adaptor.

Incl. new weld on motor towers.

I think http://www.tomsbroncoparts.com lists all the goodies needed for the swap besides eng/trans. Wildhorses & Jeffs Br. Graveyard prob. do as well.

I'm kinda wondering what heads and headers I could put on the 170 that would really throw some power into it.
