"I really want to swap out the 3 speed......"

IMHO., this is a big mistake... ;) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

This is a lot of work, lots-o-parts, & expensive. For example., a good shifter alone, is around $200. Fuel mileage will drop off. It has to be done 100% correct., no short-cuts or there will be regrets.

Most all EB stores provide a list of the parts, new & used, needed.

Bellhousing, starter, carb, kick-down, torque convert., rad. & lines, on & on, etc., etc.

My red EB was an auto.... couldn't rid of it fast enough. :D/ Got 8mpg.

Also., felt like a passenger.., not a driver. I would hand shift it just to have something to do....

Anyhoooo.., do your homework., & maybe drive one with auto so as to see what you're gett'n for a big chunk-o-change.. $-)

BTW..if you want something other than Ford., check with Advanced Adaptors, & pack your wallet..!!

Bully Bob,

Thank you for the honsesty about the idea. I think I will scrap the idea!

What about swithing to a manual 4speed tranny in place of the original 3spd? will the extra gear bring down my rpms on the highway?

Also, what are my options in regard to any 4speed transmissons that would be a good fit?

In a word...NO...

They both have 1 to 1 ratio in top gear. A 4speed just creates a lota extra shifting.

A 5 speed with over-drive would work...as the 5th gear is high & drops the "R's". But, this isn't cheap either...$2500 to $3500 + labor.

(check out Wild Horses website for one) In some cases this req. a body lift.

Do you know what gearing is in the axles...? Higher gears there would be the cheapest & easiest... assuming you mostly run street.

I would guess it has 4:11's ..... 3:50's would drop your "R's" a bit.

Prob. about $600 per axle to do this.

If you're look'n for better mileage....these rigs just don't do well in that dept. Stock tires-n-wheels., no lift., & a light foot is the only cure. :D/
