Hi All,

My 16 year old daughter purchased a 95 bronco with 150K miles on it about 6 month ago. Just finished changing the heater core and was all happy for her to start driving it again when she came back the very next day telling me that the windshield wiper and the water spray are not working...

I checked the fuse and it is fine.

I was thinking testing the windshield wiper motor but if both the wiper and the spray are not working this might be an electrical issue?

does anyone have any idea what the issue might be?

To be able to test if voltage arrive to the motor does anyone know where/how can I check it?

thanks for your help!!!

Multi-Function Switch (MFS) Testing 92-96; See Steve's Steering Column Diagram for removal/installation; "...the MFS testing is done disconnected; it's strictly an internal test of the MFS; There is no testing for the WCM - you test the MFS, the wiper & spray motors, and the wiring. If they're good but don't operate, it has to be the WCM by elimination..."

Yo,

This site slowed to a crawl last evening, so I left out this stuff:

Wiper Control Module (WCM)

Add this to the test I posted last night...

NOTE: The ground wire test at the top is only for motors that DO NOT RUN normally.

Thank you for your response. I will try to find where is that MFS and test it. Yesterday I remove the plug from the windshield wiper motor and tried to test if some power was going to it and it looks like it is. So may be it is just the motor that stop working. strange that the water stopped at the same time. Maybe they are connected somehow. In all cases I try to find the water pump by following the cable from the spray and it looks like it goes directly from the spray to the windshield water reservoir??? very strange. I am sure the pump is right there looking at me and I cannot see it.

So I will pickup tomorrow a new motor for my local part place and see if changing the motor does the trick...

I will keep you posted and thank you for your help.

Yo,

Pump is below windshield washer reservoir...

Hose runs from pump to each spray nozzle. Will try to find a pic of where the hose splits to each nozzle.

***

Fluid Pump Removal in 92-96; "... It's a PITA, but you can use a hooked pick to CAREFULLY release each tab of the locking ring behind the motor & work the ring out slowly. If you bend it, it probably won't lock again, & if you try to straighten a bent one, it will probably break;

Eric wrote, "got that ring out. I used a dental pick to get 3/4ths of the ring a little bit pulled up. Then I broke the pick. So I got my snap ring pliers and put on the curved long tip but put it on so it clamps when you squeeze the handle. Then I managed to grab a tab and pull it up some and it brought a few other tabs up with it and so I just slowly moved around and pulled up until it popped out. I also used a tiny bit of seafoam deep creep on it so it would slide out easier..." by Eric and Steve

Pump

Item Part Number Description

1 17618 Windshield Washer Reservoir

2 17664 Windshield Washer Pump

3 — Retaining Ring

(Part of 17K624)

A — Add Dry ****

***

Remove windshield washer reservoir (17618) from vehicle.

Disconnect electrical connector and hose (17543) from windshield washer pump (17664).

Using a small-bladed screwdriver, pry out retaining ring.

Using pliers to grip one wall around the electrical terminals, pull out windshield washer pump, seal and impeller assembly. If the impeller and seal come off when the windshield washer pump is pulled, they can be reassembled.

Installation

Make sure the chamber of windshield washer pump is free of foreign material prior to installing windshield washer pump into new windshield washer reservoir.

Before installing the windshield washer pump, lubricate the outside diameter of the seal with a dry lubricant such as powdered graphite. This will prevent the seal from sticking to the wall of the windshield washer reservoir, making assembly easier.

Align small projection on end cap of windshield washer pump with the slot in windshield washer reservoir.

Assemble windshield washer pump so seal seats against the bottom of the cavity.

Using a 25.4mm (1-inch) socket (preferably 12-point), hand-press retaining ring securely against end plate on windshield washer pump.

Connect headlamp dash panel junction wire (14290) and windshield washer hose.

Install windshield washer reservoir into vehicle as described in this section.

Fill windshield washer reservoir.

CAUTION: Do not operate windshield washer pump until fluid is added to the windshield washer reservoir.

Check washer system for proper operation.

Check for leaks and align the windshield washer nozzle jet and brackets (17603) if necessary.

***

Spray Nozzle Operation & Pattern Diagram in 92-96; "...The windshield washer system has two windshield washer nozzle jet and brackets (17603) located on the cowl vent screens (018A16). The washer system is activated by pushing in on the outboard end of the multi-function switch (13K359). This action energizes a windshield washer pump (17664) mounted inside a cavity in the windshield washer reservoir (17618 ). The windshield washer reservoir is mounted on the fender apron. If multi-function switch is in OFF or INT position, windshield wiper will run as long as **** is pushed in. When the **** is released, washers will stop immediately, but windshield wipers will continue to run for three to four cycles before returning to OFF or interval operation. If the multi-function switch is in LO or HI position, washers operate with no change in windshield wiper operation. NOTE: The windshield washer nozzle jet and bracket sprays windshield washer fluid in a fan-like pattern onto the windshield glass (03100), but the jet is actually a single oscillating stream. Only actuate the system momentarily to avoid sending more fluid than needed through the system. The windshield washer nozzle jet and bracket is not adjustable, and is mounted to the cowl vent screens. Do not apply shop air pressure. Do not insert any object to adjust or clean nozzles..."

washer-jet-late.jpg

Spray Nozzle Removal & Cleaning in 92-96; "...If you look closely where their bases meet the paint, you should find a tiny slot. If you insert a straightened paperclip, you'll compress the locking tab, and allow it to release easier..." by Steve

Great info! thank you all.

The fact that both the spray and the wiper stopped at the same time mean that it is electrical or if the windshield wiper stop the spray will not work either?

trying to understand why both will stop working at the same time...

They are tied together in the MFS, so it is very possible the two problems originate there or a connection to it.  It is easy to test the pump via a jumper cable.  Also, you should get close to battery voltage level when probing the connector to the pump and pressing the wiper switch.

Yo,

Multi-Function Switch (MFS) Replacement in a 96, same as 95 by bossind

My signal switch had developed some play in it resulting in my wipers not responding with out a wiggle of the lever and I lost the front signal lights and the signal in my mirrors.

Start by removing the tilt wheel lever, it unscrews.

http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/624875/fullsize/dsc00346.jpg

Next removing the cover, there are 4 phillips type screws to remove, 3 of which are access on the bottom

http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/624874/fullsize/dsc00345.jpg

The fourth one is locked on the back right, you can see the ***** hole better in this picture.

http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/624882/fullsize/dsc00354.jpg

You'll need to remove the ignition tumbler, while pushing on the release bearing turn the key to the run position, this will release the tumbler and it will slide right out.

Slide the top cover up and over the gear selector.

http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/624883/fullsize/dsc00355.jpg

Remove the 2 torx screws that hold the switch in place and disconnect the 2 wire harnesses on the back of it.

Install in reverse and your done.

Yo,

Ok, I misread your question.

Windshield Wiper Control Module

Removal

Open hood and disconnect battery ground cable.

Remove glove box.

Using the glove box opening for access, disconnect main wiring (14401).

From under the instrument panel (04320), use a flat-edged screwdriver to remove wiper control module from tabs on bracket.

Remove wiper control module from the vehicle.

Installation

NOTE: When the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the powertrain control module relearns its adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven 16 km (10 miles) or more to relearn the strategy.

Follow removal procedures in reverse order.

Tighten wiper control module ***** to 3.1-4.3 Nm (27-38 lb-in).

Yo,

The wiper control module is prone to failure according to some owners. We still have the original piece in our 96. It is noisy at times, but everything works.

You wrote that fuse was ok. It should be a 30 amp, fuse #2

The wcm is $$$$$. Our sponsor Bronco Graveyard has them for $195.00

Most folks get them from a yard queen.

But, open up the module and look for a bad solder joint.

Look at what I just found after 3 hours of googling;

Lawsuit by State of Minnesota

http://www.lawlibrary.state.mn.us/archive/supct/0006/cx98798.htm

Excerpt: In the Fall of 1994, Ford engineers modified the design of the wiper control module causing Microtron to become concerned that there would be an increase in the number of wiper control modules with electrical defects known as solder shorts. Microtron shared this concern with Ford. After the design change, consistent with Microtron's concerns, there was a marked increase in the number of defective wiper control modules produced with solder shorts. At the same time, Microtron began having more problems with the end-of-the-line tester. As a result, the number of defective wiper control modules showing up in tests performed by Ford on its finished vehicles increased dramatically. As early as December 1994, Microtron began receiving communications from Ford manufacturing plants regarding the increased number of defective wiper control modules they were receiving."

Thanks a bunch for those info!!!

Will try to take it out this week and will keep you posted.

I did test the fuse but I think I will test them again. Just in case...

I found the WMC for 30$ on ebay... might give it a try as 195 would be painful!

I will let you know the way I went...

Yo,

Ok!

You can also check with a local yard that uses Hollander Interchange, they can search other yards and have it shipped. All electrical / electronic parts are sold as is unless otherwise stated on invoice. These items (i.e. Radios,EEC, distributors, sensors, electrical harnesses, air bag modules, speedometers) rarely come with a warranty.

For a YARD SEARCH on-line, I use;
