you need to try to clarify what you mean by . "it just would start and i didnt have the impression that it was going to start "

also "the key turned all the way to the back"

first question did the bronco start and run? second question is what position of the key was all the way to the back. acc-off-on-start

the cause of a buzzing sound when its running is completely from if its not running.

the "buzzing" sound or usually described as a series of clicks when not running and failing to start it usually associated with low battery power or a faulty starting circuit in which the solenoid on the fender does the clicking.

a "buzzing" sound when already running but right after start-up is usually the starter gear tapping off the flywheel which because the flywheel and starter gear are spinning at different speeds. this can also happen before start up if the starter gear slips out or fails to engage properly and again just spins off the front of the flywheel, neither are catastrophic once or twice but over time can cause significant damage. this is usually caused by a loose starter, the incorrect starter nose depth, or a weakening spring inside the starter. if you turn the key to start while the engine is running it will do the same thing.

if your ignition cylinder inside your column is causing your starter to engage when it shouldn't there are ways to adjust the mechanisms inside the column, however someone else will have to chime in because I don't have any experience in doing that

yo fatcole77,

It may be just the lock sylinder;

try this;

Lock Cylinder & Switch Replacement & Depictions in 87-91 (figure 1) (from Factory Manual and the Ford Electrical & Vacuum Troubleshooting Manual (EVTM)

Source: by Broncobill78 (Dave) at Ford Bronco Zone Forums

http://broncozone.com/topic/14120-87-91-ignition-switch-info-troubleshooting-guide/

It is out of order, so read the 2nd from left page first; it's about it not starting

----

If cylinder isn't the culprit;

"...OEM part #E9TZ 3E715 B available at either a Ford Stealership or in the Help section, mfg Dorman...this part is for BOTH Tilt and Non-Tilt steering columns. When you turn the key to "RUN/START" and there's no spring resistance feeling it usually the actuator is broken, you can jump start the "stater relay" with the key turned to "RUN" which to me is very harsh on the relay as they are cheaply made

word of caution when driving that a piece of the broken actuator can move forward and jam the steering wheel and column shifter.....making it difficult turning and shifting...

PATIENCE is the word you need to remember when doing this job, put down a big piece of cardboard if necessary and make a diagram of the column, lable it so you can keep track of where all the parts go...

Also be CAREFULL if you drop the steering column from it's dash support, there is a white cable wrapping around it from underneath winding up on the left side which is the dash PRNDL adustment, it's spring loaded with a wire a fine wire loop to a small adjustment ***** DON'T BREAK IT with the weight of the column, use something to prop the column from going too far dowward, you'll see it when you take off the "column shroud" you'll also need to free up the column harness so you can stretch it up a bit to move the directional signal cam out of the way.....study the thread I mentioned and you'll be fine...

When you get this done, check and make sure the column shift linkage is in sync with the transmission..."

Your problem may be a maladjusted ignition switch on the column. Turning the key makes a rod move down the column and move a slide switch mounted to the top of the column, under the dash. That switch should be able to be adjusted by loosening the mounting screws and sliding the switch up toward the steering wheel. The adjustment is slight, ( about 1/8 inch or so).

If it is adjusted too far the starter circuit will not be deactivated when you allow the key to return to the run position. If so , slide the switch back down the column slightly.

Good Luck

let us know what you find.
