how does a tach work?

i have an 84 with a 4.9, i would really love to have a tachometer, but it didnt originally have one so can i just buy one and it will have the directions on how to make it magically work or is it something you have to hook up toyour motor or belts or something, thanks for any help.

It can be done, but you may have to change the entire instrument cluster, ( go to a junk yard and get the whole thing rather than just a TAC). You need the printed circuit that supports the TAC, if yours looks like the picture and has a 18 pin plug, it already is wired for a TAC and all you have to do is install it.

If you want just a tach without doing a cmplete cluster change, yes it can be done. It's not to hard either, just figuring out where to mount it will be the hard part (at least for me it would be). There are 4 wires on "most" tachs and there are instructions as well. Hope this helped...

Like BidiBronco said an aftermarket Tach is really easy to install. Most of them just have a wire that attaches to the signal wire that runs between the coil and distributor and then a power wire. Otherwise the hardest part is figuring out where to mount it, and there are hundreds of different Tachs available that mount in many different ways.
