so i have a 1974 ford bronco and its an automatic. i was driving it earlier today and when i was shifting it from park to drive something snapped... and it wont shift anymore. there is alot of play in the shifter now and it basically feels like its not doing anything. i just got the thing so i dont have to much history with broncos but i was able to pop the hood and shift it from there. What do i need to do to see inside where the problem is and what might i need to fix this?

does anyone have any pics of what might be broken? thanks alot

What Seabronc said......

OR

Most EB suppliers have these columns on the shelf (re-built) and/or have the parts you need to re-build yours. It's not that difficult.

You can also switch to a good quality floor shifter as an option.

so basically what i did was take apart the steering column and i tried to find out what was broken. When looking through everything I found that the steering column shift sleeve was broken. Not knowing much about broncos and how the automatic shifter works. i figured this was the porblem and just wanted to get a second opinion on this problem.

Here are some pictures of what is broken and where it snapped. If anyone can tell me how this acutually works. or if i am wrong. that would be Great t

I had a simular break in my '73's column.I tore it down, relaced the part.I while down the road I then had a shorted wire problem, pinched in the column, probably my fault after fixing the shift collar.I finally dicided to get a stainless tilt, from Flaming River.I will tell you what,it makes so much difference,at the same time I replaced the rag shaft, with a H.D joint from the same company, what a totally solid road feel it has now.Don't know if that helped ,but I strongly recommend one if you can.'
