It sounds like the motor needs to be rebuilt or replaced. There is a guy on eBay that sells window rebuild kits that are around $10.00. You might want to try that first.

after you got the motor out and torn apart,it could be the triangle metal lookin thing that goes into a white plastic piece that goes to the motor..the metal thing spins and its suppost to spin the plastic piece,if it doesnt put some little pieces (3) of metal between the metal and plastic piece so they both turn at the same time...i just did this to my buddies 89 and fix it..cuz the window wouldnt roll up or down, but you could here the motor working..hope this helps

Bronco rear window problems - someone should write a tech article on how to fix these. I agree with audie.a that it sounds like your gear is shot. Local auto parts store should sell replacement gear for around $10.00. Once you get into the tail gate, might as well give every pivot joint and roller a good coat of white grease while you're at it.

Yep. I'd bet dollars to donuts it's your gear. mine did exactly the same thing. With the window or motor out there's no resistence so it turns. Try hooking a pair of vice grips or a clamp on the gear and hitting the button, or holding it while you use the key switch on the back. Easy replacement.

Check your runners on the sides of your glass for tears and damage as well.

I just noticed this thread. Yes, the gear is stripped in the motor. The repair kit is fairly simple to replace the little gear, then you're good to go. Lubing the regulator and keeping the side rails and weatherstripping in good condition are also good to do. Also check the wiring on the left (driver's) side where it enters the tailgate. This section often gets pinched and can short out or loose continuity, causing the motor to stop working.

I have an 82' an I just did this the other day. It was fairly simple. Since you know how to get the motor out, take off the black vover to the gear, take out all parts of it(mine was all destroyed so i had to take all of these little peice out) then grease a new one back up(got my from JBG $15) grease up the new gear and your ready to put it back in. Just make sure that the topo of the gear if connceted to the regulator. Good luck
