Hi Everyone,

I was wondering what folks have done with their spare tires other than keeping them on that swing away tire carrier on the back. I'd like to get rid of that so that I can ride with the tailgate down if necessary to haul the occasional plywood or lumber, etc.

I'm also looking for plans for a cargo rack for the top. Does anyone have any good sources for plans to build one? I could come up with my own, but hate to reinvent the wheel!

i removed my spare tire swing and mounts for a similar reason, mine was mainly because i run on 38's so a stock 29 isnt going to help me if i get a flat, i would try and fabby something up to mount inside for a spare tire to sit against a side of the truck, remove your plastics and see what you can find, a piece of allthread, a few nits and big washers and a wingnut should work fine, second i highly reccomend you dont make a cargo rack, the fiberglass tops are weak on the actual top part, i would invest in a hatch and get a hitch mounted toolbox or steel tray made up that slides into the recieve to carry loads of stuff, good luck :)>-

Thanks for the good advice. I guess if the tire carrier were gone then a hitch hauler would work pretty well. I like the idea of keeping the tire on the wall inside too. Anyone have plans for a cool hitch hauler that would fit in the receiver?

if you put the tire inside you will still run into the problem of not being able to carry a sheet of plywood. I have done it two ways when I know I am going to carry something big I leave the tire at home, or on rare occasions I have tied the spare rack tight against the tailgate when down. Both have worked well for me. A roof rack will not be any problem if it is attached to the right part of the top. I have seen some basket style racks that will carry almost anything.

Heck, do a roof rack built just for the spare tire. I'm sure the fiberglass top is strong enough for that, then it's out of the way no matter what.

I've seen pics of that - it looks pretty cool. Maybe I could even lower my mileage to single digits.... Ha!

Right now I just have mine thrown in the back. Was thinking of getting some type of roof mount, but don't know how well it would work if I ever want to take my top off.

How about like thoes trucks over sea's mostly that have the tire strait up on the hood? Or maybe have a carrier on the front, my dads old work truck had the tire on the front and a big triangulated bar with a good winch point...

If you want I can take a few pictures of the brackets, if that will help....

Internal tire carrier option. You may have to go to a junkyard for this, though I believe I have seen it in a catalog.

Good luck,

:)>-

That's pretty cool! If I can't find it in a catalog, I'd like to try to fab one.

I found this link

Cargo Rack

Where a guy attaches a cargo rack. He seems to get strength by using the corners to mount on. Looks like it would be pretty strong and you'd be able to put a home fabbed rack in the mounts.

Thanks Seabronc, I had forgotten to take a picture of mine... I didn't know it was an option and wondered why some had it and others didn't...

Hey,

If you were willing to sell your spare tire carrier, I would be interested in buying it. I own a 1995 Bronco, and my spare tire is mounted inside, but I would rather have it outside and swing, because its easier to store stuff in the back. My email is [email protected].

Thanks, Aaron
