Why doesn't my tailgate handle lie flat?

It used to stay flipped up or fold flat when I bought it, but shortly after I bought it the handle has been stuck like this. I've taken the panel off the inside, looked around, lubed what I could see, and could not figure out why it doesnt lie flat. It is really getting to be a pain. Even when I shut the tailgate it stays out like that.

mine was dooing the same, the rods inside are probably bent or warn. i wouldnt doubt in some time you wont be able to use the handle to open your tailgate. I hope it doesnt come to that, but mine did.. Best of luck.

I had the same problem with my 92. The handle stuck up and sometimes would not release. Ended up replacing the release mechanism inside the tailgate. Mine had a rusted out spring. You may be able to adjust the mechanism: loosen the bolts and try pushing it down. The 92 has a small amount of adjustment in the bolt holes (they are not just a hole, but oblong). Also, check the plastic clips that hold the rods, they might be shot. I rode around for a while with tailgate panel out so I could grab the side rods and pull together to open the tailgate. Talk about a pain...

I know I am about ready to scrap the tailgate altogether. I hate the window in it and I hate the handle on the inside. I want a regular truck tailgate and a lockable window hinged at the top like a p/u with a topper. Anyone done that?
