Hi all. Can someone tell me information about the rear axle on my 85 bronco?

My bronco info is in my signature.

I found out through research on the net that the front axle is a dana 44 with a gear ratio of 3.54.

I can't find info for the rear axle. Here are the letters and numbers exactly how they read on the tag on the rear housing:

DR-D 4J19

55 8 8SB08A

Just want to know for the sake of knowing.

Thanks. Bill

If all else fails....(in neutral) jack up the rear, chalk-mark the tire & the dr. shaft.

Count the number of revolutions....1 rev. of the wheel should get you 3.5+ revs of the dr. shaft.

If it isn't the same as your front differential, you will get a nasty surprise when going into 4x4 because the wheels would be turning at different rates. It is unlikely that they aren't the same ratio. Also there is an axle code on the safety compliance sticker on the driver side rear door post. If the first character is a H the truck was shipped with a limited slip rear axle, the middle character indicates the gear ratio 9 = Ford 8.8 3.54. If it has a third character (2) then the front axle is limited slip also.

that info is only good if nobody changed it. Then you are stuck soing what Bully Bob said.

Hi seabronc, here is a pic of the sticker on the door post. The axle code is I9 or 19. So the 9 means that the rear ratio is 3.54, the same as the front. Is it posible that the front and rear axles are from different manufactures? Or did I just get the wrong info (front axle being a dana 44) on the internet? The front and rear axle housings had 2 different types of tags. The front tag was held on with 2 bolts, the rear one was only held on by 1 bolt.

Thanks, Bill
