I have a 1969 Bronco, 3 on the tree with a fresh 302. What carburetor has had the best response on throttle & idle & reliability for a stock 302?

carbs are going to be mostly a personal choice. lots of arguing back and forth, my personal expierence is that a holley out performs a edelbrock/carter but everybody says that you can put a edelbrock on and never have to touch it again. the holleys that i have ran in the past, once they were set up ie. jetted properly and adjusted for the engine, ran great with no problems. others will say that you get better gas milage with a edelbrock, and this might be true but maybe thats why a holley feels like it performs better. for a small block right around 600cfm is usually good enough unless its a heavily modified engine. there is actually a formula for figuring the cfm size but i dont know it off the top of my head. i converted to efi a few years ago and love it, never floods out up in mtns. always starts right up even when it is below zero outside, and you can do the swap for around the same price as a new carb. a local bone yard just sold me most of the parts for the swap; upper and lower intake, throttle body, injectors, fuel rails, computer, and complete harness for $50 bucks, so in my opinion thats the way to go. hope that helps

What Rigger said "plus"...,

A "fresh eng." will make any "neglected" carb. look really bad.

For mild to rough 4x4'n the stock motorcraft 2 brl. is fine.

I had several rigs with that carb. & they never missed a beat., street or dirt.

Thanks guys! Now I just need to dial in a model number for a 600 cfm.
I have always ran the edelbrocks with 100% luck. On Friday night i just swapped in an edelbrock 600 cfm in place of the "new" holley that was on there. Holley would be great if cleaned up and tweeked, i just dont have the time so with the edelbrock its bolt and go.

Looks like I am a little late to the discussion, but for the best basic application, I would stick with the original FoMoCo. If you don't plan on ever taking it off road and this is only a weekend-around-town rig, then I would say Holley or Edelbrock. If you want climbing capabilities, I would say FoMoCo, Edelbrock or Carter, but stay away from Holley if you are building a rock rig. I went through 2 professionally tuned Holley carbs for off road and they both had the same problem. They loaded up on inclines and wouldn't perform in the way that they should. For an off road rig (and like was said before, it is subject to debate) I wouldn't trust a Holley one bit. But on the highway I absolutely loved it.
