Once my 94 Bronco XLT is mechannically sound (after a new gas tank, ball joints, and oil pan), I would like to do some rustproofing underneath. A friend of mine has a shop with a lift. He is one of the finest Hummer customizers in the mid west, so I will roll my Bronco in at night so no one sees me in a Hummer beauty parlor. My question is, has anyone painted the underside of their Bronco with rustproof paint? I don't want to take off a bunc of parts, just keep her from rusting out underneath. Any advice would be appreciated!

As Steve pointed out, paint isn't really the best option for doing the underbody. I spent a lot of time in New England and didn't have a lot of problems (of course that may have been because the engine , PS pump & tranny kept the underside pretty well oiled :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> ) I've never been a big fan of the wal-mart spray bombs though because it just isn't as durable. Weeks/months after applying it you can still slide under there & rub it off with your fingers. I used to work in a Ford dealership body shop & when someone wanted a quality undercoating applied we used a 3M product called Body Schutz that was simply excellent. It was very tough & resilient and also worked great as a sound deadener. Very easy stuff to apply.

Here's a link to a photo of it applied to a tranny tunnel:

More recently I've seen guys using the do-it-yourself Rhino Lining stuff for this and it seems to work just as well with the added advantage of being available in a spray can.

Thanks for the tips! With all the road salt here in Ohio, I really want some sort of undercoat protection. Which parts should I NOT coat? I assume driveshafts and steering parts. Anything else?

Undercoating is definitely the way to go. Anyone have it done at a body shop? I need body work, and I wonder how much it would be to have the shop spray it for me. AS much as I dislike letting other people work on my Bronco, the products in body shops seem to perform better than the Wal Mart bomb cans. Anyone have approximate prices?

Yes, applying it was one of the scut jobs I did while I worked at the body shop and I've used it on a number of my own cars & trucks. It goes on pretty easy without thinner but you do use a special gun for it since it's way too thick for the regular guns. As far as how much they'd charge I have no idea, I don't even know what *my* shop charged. I know we certainly made money doing it :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> If you have a compressor or access to one you can do it yourself. It's real easy stuff to apply & you can also shoot the insides of your door with it (works great as a sound deadner and also makes the doors feel & sound heavier & more solid. Not as hollow sounding when they close) and I've seen it used on floorboards & inner quarters inside the cab as well as on the underside.

applicator gun:

Reading thru the info they actually use a much nicer system now than when I was using it. The can the stuff comes in has a disposable plastic tube already stuck in there so you just attach the applicator gun right to it and none of the stuff comes in contact with the spray gun so there's no clean-up afterward. Pretty slick.

At any rate, you could probably buy the gun & a few cans of product for less than the price you'll get from the shop

I don't believe the factory did any undercoating, but most dealerships would do it for an extra cost when buying a vehicle. I don't have aclue what it costs now, since I haven't bought a new truck in 10 years. It used to run about $350-$400. Getting estimates from local shops to Line-X or apply other brands of bedliner to the Bronco was $500 and up.
