Look at the axle code on the door jamb sticker or the ID tag on the rear axle to determine your gear ratio. IF the rear axle is "I9" or "H9" which is 3.55:1, the front ratio is 3.54:1. Doesn't make a difference if the axle is leaking, but you may want to change gears for larger tires while the whole front end is apart to replace a seal, or if you have a broken gear tooth. JSM84

yep it's H9. and a dana 44 huh? what would be a good gear size? i'm assuming this wouldn't have a negative affect on the 31 x 10.5 i have on now but a good thing if i do upgrade. i might like to go a size higher and wider when i'm done eith the restoration or the tires are shot but, they are almost brand new.

thanks.

If you're only planning on going up to 32x11.50's I wouldn't bother with the time and cash involved in regearing. Won't notice much of a difference, and you won't be putting much stress on the tranny. I did this same thing when I first got my bronco, and had no issues running the slightly larger tire. If you're hopping up to 35's+, then you're gonna want to swap gears.

I agree with Johnski, the 31x10.50 tires will work fine with the stock 3.55 gears. I swapped to 4.56 gears for my 35x12.50's prior to the SAS, and the parts alone cost around $600. THe axle code "H9" is the 3.55's with factory limited slip (Trac-Lok). The front Dana44 TTB axle is "open" or no L/S. You might want to add a Trac-Lok or L/S (limited slip) if you do much offroading. I put a full spool up front with the 4.56's, but that can be ******* axleshafts and u-joints. That's the reason for the Dana60 and Sterling 10.25" from the F-350. JSM84
