My 70 302 with standard 3 speed keeps dropping out of 2nd gear. I had the stock column shifter on which the problem was really bad - I just assumed it was due to the worn linkage. I recently installed a Hurst 3 speed floor shifter thinking that it would definetly solve that problem. The shifter is great, smooth and reliable, however I was upset when the 2nd gear problem still existed. No where near as bad, but it still wants to slip out of 2nd after letting off the gas and coasting for a distance. Is this a common problem with stock 3 speeds or can someone suggest how I can fix the problem . FYI - the transmission was also recently rebuilt - and no, I don't want to sink more money into getting a 4 or 5 speed, nor an automatic, if it comes to that, I can live with the minor disturbance.

Thanks very much for your time and help.

Bill, if the shifter is adjusted properly, the problem lies in the tranny...

Did a shop rebuild the tranny?? If so, a visit to them is in order, sounds like the shift fork may not be fully engaging the gear, or the sift dogs may be worn,. If it is either of those, it may need to come out...

Thank you for the comeback STLKIKN. The shifter is adjusted correctly, it pulls the gears stop to stop, since the transmission was done by a "professional" shop, I guess my next stop is to take it back and complain - goes to show you - if you want a job done right - you gotta do it yourself!! Lesson learned (again). Thanks for the help. :excl:

If you don't want to spend a lot of money, there are a ton ,probably two tons of three speeds,if you ask everybody has them and they are cheap.Check here ,broncofix, and classic broncos web site.If If I ever get another E.B. with a manual,I'll get another nv3550,great smooth tranny, with low first gear, and an overdrive 5th gear.BANDIT <)
