ok guys, with your help and diagnostics it is determined that the noise is the transmission, when you put a hose next to the bell housing on the transmission that is where the ticking sound is coming from along with the transmission starting to slip. So,the next thing I need help with is some ideas about my transmission.I have an E4OD transmission in my 1992 Ford bronco and I only want to take it out once.Advice from Seabronc is to have someone else rebuild it and that is a good idea because I had a 72 Monte Carlo when I was younger and I tried to rebuild it becuse reverse went out on it,I fixed the reverse but it wouldn't go into park when I was done.My truck is a daily driver and I do take it off road once in a while so would I just have it rebuilt and add a shift kit for better performance or is there a different transmission that can be put in it but is beefier than the E4ODfor my 92 Bronco.Any suggestions?

yo R,

This is by Ford; for 96 Bronco, but similar

Shift Concerns: Feel — Soft/Slipping (Some/All) Possible Component Reference/Action

213 — ELECTRICAL ROUTINE Powertrain Control System
  • Perform Shift Point Road Test.
  • Electrical inputs/outputs, vehicle wiring harnesses, powertrain control module, throttle position sensor, electronic pressure control, transmission fluid tem 313 — HYDRAULIC/MECHANICAL ROUTINE Fluid   Improper level
  • Adjust fluid to proper level.
  • Condition
  • Inspect according to instructions in this section under Fluid Condition Check.
Improper Pressures This is done w/E4OD still in-place
  • Low line pressure
  • Check pressures at line pressure tap. Perform Line Pressure Tests. Refer to Pressure Chart No. 401 for specifications. If pressures are low or all shifts are soft/slipping, go to main controls.
CAUTION: Perform line pressure test prior to performing stall speed test. If line pressure is low at stall, do not perform stall speed test or further transmission damage will occur. DO NOT MAINTAIN WIDE-OPEN THROTTLE in any gear range FOR MORE THAN FIVE (5) SECONDS.

This test verifies the line pressure is within specifications.

  1. Connect pressure gauge to line pressure tap.
  1. Start engine and check line pressures. Refer to the following chart to determine if line pressure is within specification.
  1. If line pressure is not within specifications, perform On-Board Diagnostics and Pinpoint Test E, air pressure check and service main control system or pump as required.

READ MORE & VERIFY all specifications, with your year E4OD

Main Controls (Also ref to as the Valve Body)
  • Bolts not tightened to specification
  • Retighten bolts to specification.
  • Gaskets damaged
  • Inspect for damage and replace.
  • Line modulator valve springs damaged, stuck, misassembled
  • Inspect for damage, contamination. Service as required.
  • Electronic pressure control solenoid malfunction
  • Refer to Electrical Routine No. 213.
  • Accumulator assembly damaged or wrong assembly
  • Inspect for damage. Service as required. Verify correct assembly is used.
Pump Assembly
  • Bolts not tightened to specification
  • Retighten bolts to specification.
  • Gaskets damaged
  • Inspect for damage and replace.
  • Main regulator/booster valve damaged, misassembled
  • Inspect for damage. Service as required.
  • Electronic pressure control air bleed check valve damaged or missing
  • Inspect for damage. Service as required.
For diagnostics related to specific shifts, see Reference/Action
  • Refer to the following Shift Routine(s) for further diagnosis:
  Soft/Slipping Shift 1-2, Routine 226/326   Soft/Slipping Shift 2-3, Routine 227/327   Soft/Slipping Shift 3-4, Routine 228/328   Downshifts, 229/329
Temperature sensor
  • Run On-Board Diagnostics
  • Try a Self Test for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC)s by my pal, BroncoJoe19
http://broncozone.com/topic/14269-code-reader/page__pid__74587__mode__threadedThe engine temperature must be greater than 50° F for the Key On Engine Off (KOEO) Self-Test and greater than 180° F for the Key On Engine Running (KOER) Self-Test.
Run it around to heat the engine up and shift thru all gears incl Reverse. Then turn off all accessories/lights, etc.

Make sure A/C is off and transmission is in Park (automatic) or in Neutral for a Manual & release clutch.

Do Key On Engine Off (KOEO) portion first.

And Post em here according to:
    KOEO
    &
    KOER

Any trans swap such as and M5OD or AOD or C6 will still be costly and you still have to have ittested to ensure it doesn''t need rebuilding or resealing
