i hear a fairly loud whining noise while the engine is running and feel a hard shift between 1st & 2nd gear. this is a 76 with a C4 i just purchased. wondered if there is a problem coming up? i checked the fluid it was red and the right level. at this point im just assuming a possible trans problem any thoughts? i do have power steering so i will check the fluid cause i read on another post that can cause some whining noises. but this seems to loud for that.

Well, I can tell you up front that I'm not going to be any sort of oracle on this issue. However, having dealt with C6's most of the time I can tell you that when they start getting loud and the fluid level & condition is good then you're looking at some sort of imminent failure. The C4 isn't a bad tranny but when it starts to whine you have problems. Perhaps a C4 Guru wil jump in here but until then I'd anticipate problems and start preparing to rebuild/repair/replace the current C4. Making noise seems to usually be the *last* thing they do. Some do it for a while before they die, some don't. Wish I could give you something better.
