1990 5.8 liter Automatic w/over drive, i believe tranny is an EOD4, Changed tranny fluid and filter, used 6 quarts as it says in manual but now it will not shift into any gears? Any known reason for this? Thank you. Shifted just fine before i messed it up lol

I'd take a look at the shifter linkage. Make sure it is moving properly. ALSO, You got 4x4? If so check that shifter too to make sure it's in gear and not neutral. Let us know!

The filter is that easy. As long as the bolts are in all the way on the valve body, there shouldn't be an issue with it. Double check the fluid while you're at it too, overfilling could cause problems such as not having gears. Did you mess around with the spool valve in the transmission? (it is what the shifter connects to on the inside of the transmission)

Other than that, I cant really think of much else that a simple fluid change can cause your kind of problem, Good luck mate!

All i did was change gasket and poped a new filter in, no bolts needed, it just pushes in. So weird that now it wont shift?

Some common E4OD Issues

My 96 OWNERS MANUAL SHOWS 16 quarts for fluid change

Motorcraft Mercon® Multi-Purpose Automatic Transmission Fluid Ford XT-2-QDX or equivalent meeting Ford Specification ESP-M2C166-H

Fluid Capacity

E4OD (4x4) Using new style elastomeric transmission fluid pan gasket 16.4 Quarts

E4OD (4x4) Using old style cork transmission fluid pan gasket 16.2 Quarts

Approximate capacity includes transmission fluid cooler and transmission fluid cooler tubes. Fluid level indicator (7A020) should be used to determine actual fluid requirement and fluid specifications. Check level at operating temperature. DO NOT OVERFILL. An additional 0.3L (0.3 quart) is required if vehicle has an auxiliary transmission fluid cooler.

Filter, Internal, Grommet Warning; "...When ever you go to change your trans filter, Always make sure to pull out the little round rubber do hicky thingamabob. Lets call it a gromit or a seal? Theres this part of the trans filter that is inserted into the trans (a round tube that goes up into this hole ); Now the tube has a gasket of sorts that wraps around the tube ( kinda like a wide O-ring )It form a seal between the tube and the hole it goes in. Well what ended up killing my trans was that fact that the last guy that changed the trans filter didnt notice that this o-ring thing (gromit Or what ever) did'nt come out with the filter it stayed in the hole! He left it in there; & installed the new filter witch had its preinstalled gromit already; So what he did, is he (unknowingly) stacked two gromits on top of each other, Witch did not let the filters tube fit as it should. It was starving itself for fluid!! It was sucking air as well as tranny fluid! (in other words not working right) ..."

Ditto M5 here......be sure that the filter gromet is on the new filter, and the old one isn't stuck in the valvebody. A filter without a grommet will not be able to provide the proper seal for the pump to **** fluid from the pan.

Good Luck
