Hello all! I recently acquired this gem (Pic) and am having a little transmission trouble that's going to require a rebuild. Right now it was a 3 spd manual in it. Since I have to drop the transmission anyway, I was thinking about putting something different in it.

For the record, this pup is not going to go offroad. There's a bit too much tied into the body restoration and paint to wreck it on any trails. What the question is, is that since I am planning on using this as an almost "daily" driver with s decent bit of highway driving is should I go ahead and put a 4spd or 5spd in it?

That being posed, does anyone have an recommendations on how to get this accomplished? I regret to say that I'm not an extremely adept gearhead but my brothers are. I just love the way older vehicles look.

I should mention, the engine is a 87 (I believe) 302 **

Hi Goose., welcome..!

NICE rig..!!

My opinion following; (long/short)

1st., be sure it's the trannie not the transfer. (no info given as to pinpoint the trans.)

2nd., a four speed is a waste unless you like churn'n butter..! & you'll likely/rarely use all four. (3sp & 4sp are both 1:1 in hi gear.)

3)., Pretty much the same for a 5 speed.., unless you're in the flatlands.

(5th is likely overdrive)

Trannie swaps usually req. cutt'n up the floorboard/****/tunnel.

i.e. relocating shifter & T-case shifter.

Most req. dr. shaft mods. Some req. body lifts.....! <_<

If bro's are mod savy....they'll understand.

BTW., is it column shift or converted to floor shift..?

B
